Hey guys, i bought a '93 ranger recently and i did an oil change on it, i put pennzoil silver 5w30 with a regualr filter, and a few days later i noticed my check oil light was on, so i check my oil level and its still at full. Now my engine is ticking, everyday it gets worse. I also noticed that randomly my oil guage will flicker down to 0 and then back to normal. I sounds like its from the top of the engine. Im not sure what has happened. I dont even know where to begin. The rig has 280 000km on it. Please help me. Thanks guys

Try another oil filter.

Welcome to The Ranger Station!

If the oil filter doesn't fix it, drop the pan. There is a pickup tube with a screen on it that has a tendency to get plugged up. Take a lintless rag/shop towel and just clean it out. Try putting about a half can of sea foam into the oil too... It could be a blocked passage.

had the truck been running synthetic before? or did you just decide to switch to synthetic in a motor thats been running conventional oil for 280,000 kms

I wonder if the seller used extremely heavy oil to cover up a severely worn engine??

I doubt filter or synthetic. Low/no oil pressure with engine noise is not a good sign. At what rpm do you get check oil etc.?
