Hi All -- this is a continuation from the "won't start with SPOUT connected" thread, but since we've moved on to a timing job I thought these questions belonged in a new thread.

The questions:

1. We're still not sure where the CPS wire goes. I have a copper wire where I think it could go (frankly I don't see any other alternative), that brings it out in the 1-2 cylinder intake manifold area. It looks like when the CPS bracket is installed it will hold the wiring bundle away from the oil pump sprocket. The later years have a little channel for it on the rear timing cover but ours doesn't. Does anyone know? Previously it was routed outside the front timing cover, which is definitely wrong.

2. Does the crank pulley look ok? It seems like it might have had some too-close encounters with the CPS. Otherwise it seems overall pretty round and the fins aren't bent. I have more pics if needed.

3. The locator pin for the CPS bracket is sheared in two. We definitely didn't do that, it was already like that. Is that pin important enough to take the time to drill out the halves and install a new pin? We probably will anyway, just curious and wondering if it might be related to the previous question.

4. The first pic below shows the crank timing in the condition we found it in (about two teeth off). It is possible, even likely, that this happened during some shenannigans that we did prior to taking the picture. But hypothetically, if we didn't move it, and this was the timing situation before, would it cause the SPOUT saga?

5. The second pic below is how we think it should go. Triangle lined up with notch, keyway at 12 O'Clock. We'd appreciate a second opinion as neither of us has ever done a timing job before.

Thanks!!!!

Even in '89 there was a trough for the crank sensor wires to go through the rear timing cover, so someone has been in yours before and done some things...

The engine wouldn't run if the crank was 2 teeth off, so it was probably in getting it apart, it happens...

That open hole just to the left of the crank pulley should have a bolt in it, I know it's 6mm but I don't remember how long, it's probably contributing to the amount of oil that's everywhere.

The crank sensor alignment pin, not sure how important it is, I haven't had my '90 apart in a while but I know I made a pin for it (since it's an '86 block...) out of a 6mm bolt with a long shoulder then cut the head off the bolt...

Thanks Scott... We just figured out that the inner timing cover is missing and so that's why there's no trough. Sigh. That open hole might be where one of the inner cover bolts would go, too.

It isn't as oily as it looks, it's mostly wet from cleaning and valve cover leak that's been fixed.

Good tip on the pin. I think we'll fix it because I'd hate to find out that it mattered later on, you know?

That loose wire is probably the old shield wire so can be removed

Pull the AUX gear off and see if you can figure a way to route the new crank sensor wires behind it and hold it in place with custom plate(thin) using the old back cover bolt holes to secure the plate

Ron you mean the copper wire? That's the one I put there to fish the cable with.

Yes, the copper wire, thought it was odd to see that there
