Hello! Does anyone know how difficult it is to replace a broken fuel tank strap on a 1991 Ford Ranger 114 wheelbase? It is the rear strap that is broken and they are pretty cheap at the auto parts store. My question is, do I need to completely drop the tank? The tank is completely full right now which sucks! If someone could give me step by step instructions that would be great. It looks like there is a shield close to the drive shaft that needs removed that will allow me to access one side of the strap.

The gas tank housing on my 94 rotted on the back half. including the strap. I scrounged a length of 1 1/2 wide binding strapping. from a loading dock. You can also buy universal gas tank strap. 1 1/2 wide with holes every inch . I bolted it to the frame, and ran it under what is left of the houslng. I used a a piece of 5/16 all thread to where the strap bolts to the bed Same set up, only worse in a Jeep Grand Wag, so it was a pretty easy hack. You should block up the tank with boards and a jack and give it a slight boost up before you rig the strap. The tank can crack , so be gentle and distribute the weight with a wide board.

Usually one strap is enough to hold an empty tank in place while a damaged one is being replaced.

Since the tank is full, stick a floor jack under it.

Assuming my '97 B4000 is similar...

First, you gotta remove the gas tank skid-plate (4 bolts) to gain access to the 2 tank straps. Then, each strap is held on by just 1 bolt, on the end nearest the driveshaft. The strap's other end is a T-shaped hook that slips into a V-shaped slot in the frame, and so you simply release that hook by turning the strap 90 degrees (parallel to floor). That's it!

You might have to wiggle the tank (an inch or so) away from the frame rail before you have room to twist the strap? If tank is full: place a can or something under the tank rear end cuz it'll drop down, but the front end cannot cuz it's firmly wedged by that pesky crossmember.

Yeah, they are pretty easy to pull off and put on...I sanded mine down, primed them, then coated them with two layers of rust paint...a bit of preventative maintenance...

I need a rear strap for my 87 single cab 2wd long bed as well....

Hope it goes well for ya.

There was a recall on this on newer f150s.
