Im looking into buying a 1990 Mazda MX-6 GT with the F2T 2.2L Turbo, automatic. It has 4 wheel disc brakes with ABS, P/S, P/B, P/Locks, P/Windows, a moonroof, and 120,000miles. There is very little rust on it. Does anybody here have one of these and can tell me what to look for? The guy wants $3,000 for it, but thats what he wanted for a 91 Mustang LX hatchback, and he sold it for $600, so I'll probably try and talk him down to that.

I had one and the valve seals were shit on it (150,000+ on it), didn't find out till a week after I bought it and I started it up and it smoked out the neighborhood. Other than random INSANE smoking it was a decent car until the gas tank ruptured after some drifting on washboard dirt roads. Relatively fast, and almost nothing but regular maintenance ever performed.

I had a thing called the igniter take a shit on it once, its parallel to the ignition coil so I of course I changed to coil because it was cheaper only to find out it was the igniter a $200+ part. I ended up buying a whole junk distributer for $30 which contained an igniter. Symptoms of this problem is the car will just shut off and not start and by the time you get out the tools and start to try diagnosing it the igniter resets itself (its a blob of solid state and I think when it cools it starts working again) and everything works great. Its painful, cost me 2 tows from my dads B2500.

Good beater car, I would buy another.

I had an '89 Probe (basically the same car.) It was a pretty nice car but...

Anything with the 2.2L drivetrain eats transmissions. Mine had 122k on it when I toasted it doing some sweet burnouts. It was a 5sp manual. Now that was probably my fault, but it's just got that reputation. I've also had problems with the electric engine fan not turning on. Sometimes it would and sometimes it wouldn't. I ended up just hooking up a toggle switch.

I would not pay $3000 for it though. I bought my Probe four years ago for $1700 and it was in PERFECT condition, other than a few cigarette burns, a scratch on the driver's door, and a broken power window motor. It even had a brand new motor in it.

No personal exp., But didn't SOME, MX'6's come with All Wheel Steering?

your thinking of the MX-6 4WS, not a good design. i have heard nothing but complaints about it. the GT is one step below that. and thanks for the replies, i plan on taking a look at it tomorrow.

Yo,
My buddy had one, and something was going bad on the turbo (the wastegate i think), so if you floored it, the excess pressure had nowhere to go and you could generate some massive boost.

massive boost, lol. if i do buy it, ill probably throw a thunderbird turbo on it.
