1988 Ranger Restoration - Keeping a Promise

Yep. Just some warmup enrichment and PID O2 tuning crap.to get after.

PID = Biggest pain in the ass ever.

Amazing how much power that ECU has added on this tired assed engine.

Honestly looking forward to the trail ride to get opinions of others that have had 2.9s over the years to see how mine stacks up against stock.

Positive Injector Displacement?
Perverted Inward Didgeridoos?
Pacifist Incestual Demons?
Perky Iguana Dicks?

Proportional integral derivative. The equation that the ECM follows when determining how to respond to measurements taken by the O2 sensor and adjust air-fuel ratio as a result.

I've watched this at least three times, and still have adjustments to make to get it "right."

I was wondering why the text seemed wrong Saturday morning but first thing I did was watch that vid and was like "omg check this out" (the steering)

Once you revved that beauty.... it's amazing what the human brain can do... with the headphones, the flicker in my britches, and the fact I would SWEAR I smelled exhaust, you could have blind folded me and I would have been standing right next to it.

Haha, appreciate it.

I'm I'm the middle of putting a technical article together on the EPAS conversion.

So what is it that your working on now. Because tuning a PWM motor sounds awfuly close. PID is like you said the equation the the ECM uses to correct its self. Servos use encoders to tell a computer where it is and you tell the computer where it should be. Cnc controlled machines are constantly looking where they are vs where they should be.

Most helpful trip.ive made with the truck so far was to the 20th Anniversary Trail Ride. Got a firm sense of direction from the event, especially after seeing trucks like @bobbywalter, @85_Ranger4x4, @ryan, and @PlumCrazy. Definitely know the direction I want to go now. Think I'm sticking.to the rally/track style, but picked up some serious knowledge from seeing their work in action. Learned more in two days than I did in the two years preceeding it.

perky iguana dicks? your killin me......lolz

for your intended goals, i can see screaming the limits of the 2.9. with the ability to get d28 shafts on the table, keeping the weight down and suspension low for rally work...it is a perfect combo since you have access to parts and run a modern processor.

i love it.

You think it's worth saving the D28? Wanted to go to a later D35 for the wider stance, same with exploder 8.8

If you're not wheeling it and not doing 4 wheel drive burnouts, there's nothing wrong with the D28. I left it in my daily driver because I'll never break it and I have a shit ton of parts.

D35 swaps are totally cool and stuff but not always necessary and have a couple small drawbacks. They are by far more prone to wheel bearing failure.

Keep in mind that its getting harder to find d28 shafts and maybe other hard parts.

I just had to go through the d28 in my b2 for the trail ride. You aren't wrong took me days to find some of the parts. Ended up buying chromoly shafts for the driverside, from broncograveyard. The lockouts can still be found on eBay.

that is what i was referring to. the chromo shafts are available now and the d28 is smaller and lighter. for rally work with stockish tire size i would keep the 28. easier to lower it as well.

the 28 and 35 are hell to get parts for where i shop.

what about solid-axle swaps/ jeep D35?, those should be plenty common. I prefer the TTB setup but sometimes you have to move on when parts get hard to come by .

Front in a Jeep is a D30, rear is a D35. SAS brings on clearance issues with the front crossmember that would need addressed if Mr Junky doesn't want to lift his truck.

I wish I had known D28 stuff was sought after out east, I would have thrown mine in.

D35 stuff is easier to find here... but I can tell the herd is thinning rapidly.
