1988 Bronco II Virginia Trail Build

Wondering if this is from when I had cranked the truck with rotor timing off drastically and caused fuel to sit on pistons not firing correctly and now that it actually ran a length of time and heated up fuel condensed in the top of intake and once it stopped running(no suction pulling vapor into engine) it started dripping back out... ?

I suppose anything is possible... but I think it's pretty unlikely. 20 minutes of run time at temp certainly should have cleared anything from past failed attempts. At least that's my take on it.

Kinda how I felt may have been hoping... I plan to set timing and idle whichever evening I get time this week then see where I am at from there.

Been thinking about a technical document I read years ago and tried searching it up on the web. I can't seem to find it but I know it came from the Dellorto Handbook authored by Bob Tomlinson. My copy of the book is someplace back in Michigan with the rest of VW specific stuff.

I think fuel stand off is more of a carburetor thing... so fuel reversion is probably a better term to search. I know dual carbs on an air cooled VW were very prone to fuel stand off.

I really can't think of what else it could be. Maybe @bobbywalter or @RonD might have something to add to the conversation.

Something else I just thought of.

Did you bring it back down to idle after your cam break in? Let it run a bit... maybe a few free revs too... just to clean it up and stabilize it?

Or did you just shut it down at engine break in speed?

Well it actually ran out of fuel @ 18 seconds left :) so I shut it down as it was dying down.. Probably 1300 +/- RPM

I'm a bit scattered brained today... well everyday... maybe.

I've always ensured they will run at somewhere near normal idle speed and had all timing equipment ready when I start a new engine. I set base timing then get after the cam break in speed run. Not knowing where timing was changes the dynamics. Then you did a forced shutdown right in engine cruise speeds. Fuel dripping out the throttle body could just be a result from the conditions.

I would just take a deep breath... get the timing light hooked up... fire it up and get it to idle... set base timing. Then just run it... rev it... get it back into break in speeds for a few minutes and see how she runs.

Yeah that is my plan. I tossed around fooling with timing first but it ran decent enough with setting the distributor I figured I could get break in done first then worry about it. Maybe, maybe not the best idea but I wanted those lifters spinning.. I am not horribly concerned as good as it seemed to run I don't think its anything significant.

Took a little detour today between 40k mile PM on my 2020 Ranger and setting timing and idle on the BII. Took my 69' Vette I inherited out for a cruise through the county. Just stopped at a local pub get one influential beverage for the cold of the garage and back to the project. Hope to get this timing and idle set today, we shall see.

Well I kinda hit this project like gasoline and I was getting some good progress for a month or so and have dropped most of that... My apologies to the group, myself, and this bronco. I did spend most of the weekend with it and got more aggravation than pleasure.. Won't even go into the issues I'm at now but basically it runs, smokes, and goes forward in short. So on a cool note I found some tires I REALLY like and because they are "Chinese" tires I didn't want to hold off on ordering for fear they would disappear within a year or two. So I snatched 5 up (4 because FedEx got millinial syndrome) waiting on the 5th.. Let me know opinions!

I hope to get after my rig soon. I've also been tire shopping. I fear the sales they typically have this time of year may be slim to near non existent with all that's going on in the world right now.

Those look pretty aggressive... should do what you want.

I have no doubt the tires will more like will the cursed little Bronco give up and accept a new life outside of the crusher. It is pushing my limits lately.

31x10.50x15 planning on the Duff 3” system

Well it's a somewhat relieving day, at least the transmission shifts. Appears the linkages are pretty finicky and still needs some fine tuning. Made a little test run up and down the road. It has a miss, still smokes, and engine light flickers on and off when stopping. But it's progress and I'll take that. It also is a hood and window wiring away from freeing up garage storage.
