I have a 1988 4x4 2.3 ranger(my first ever ford). I have had the engine rebuilt, new m5od,ever thing has bin perfect till today. It started sputers real bad around1500-4000 rpm, after 4000rpm it clears out and pulls hard.and this problem comes and goas. Its not my timing i checked that, its not my coil,it did not jump time.

wat electronics could make it do this? Its hard to explain this.It will spuder and run like shiot for about 3 miels than it will clear up and run fine for a few miels then start spudering and falling below 700rpm and try to die out then clim back up and dip down again.wtf it started runing good when i got back home then shut it of. i cant figer it out.

Could be a vacuum leak. My 2.3 I had the high and low idle thing. Thats one of the reasons I put a 2.8 in it, the other reason it had no power to climb up a hill.

i dont have any vacume leeks.and i dont think that would make it spuder at mid rmp?

02 sensor or a dirty maf. get some seafoam and run it through and see what happens.

this thing has a maf?:icon_confused: are you talking about iac unit?

mass air flow sensor, im not sure if your truck has one, but if it does, clean it.

im not too familiar with the f.i 2.3 engines, just the carb engines.

but again ,a 10$ can of seafoam maybe your answer.

you might have something called a map instead of mas. I think you have something called an air idle bypass valve? instead of the iac valve. you should check that . pull the wire off of it and see if the idle chnges at all. you can try and clean theses also. have you done maitanance, fuel filter pcv, plugs wires etc..... are you throwing any codes

i figed it out:yahoo: damn water in air box:icon_confused:
