hi I’m new to this site.
but i was hoping that someone on here might be able to help me out. ok i got a 1987 ranger xlt 4x4 with the 2.9L. my problem is if i drive it for a little while and shut it off, when i start it back up, the engine revs up to about 3000 rpms for a few seconds. it just started doing this, it don’t do it all the time only once in awhile. I replaced the idle air motor, pvc valve, ECT, and the air temp sensor. i cant find any vacuum leaks. The only codes I get is that the egr valve not opening and no knock sensed during test. so if someone could help me out it would be great because I’m lost and don’t have a clue why it is doing this

maybe the egr is messed up? never heard of that happening..

the egr has been disabled. it just started doing this

did you pull codes?

get yourself an 88-92 federal emissions computer. You disabled the EGR so its going to run like ass because the 86-87 computer thinks its still there.

yes im trying to find one that dont cost to much. but it was doing this before i disabled the egr valve

I have an '87 BII, and I disabled the EGR system years ago. Capped the manifold inlet, cut and bent the outlet of the EGR pipe to seal it, and disconnected and capped the vacuum lines. Same computer, runs fine.

thank you for saying that because i know it has nothing to do with the EGR because it was doing this before i plugged the pipe up. but everyone keeps telling me that it is the problem

try the throttle position sensor
and ya know, it could just be your o2 sensor heating back up...

i unpluged it and it still did it. but do you think the o2 sensor could be doing it?

i unpluged the wireing going to the EVR solenoid. and i unpluged the tps and it still did it

I agree with Psychopete . . . this really sounds like a vacuum leak issue. Use the diagram on the sticker under the hood to carefully trace and check all vacuum lines. You may have missed something. When I disconnected my EGR, I disconnected and plugged all the EGR vacuum lines.
