well i got a 1987 Bronco II with the Fm145 transmission and a 2.9L motor. The shifter on the transmission is broke and the only replacement I can find is a core shifter which is fine but the transmission needs and overhaul and from what I’ve seen it’s a pain in the butt plus parts don’t seem to be the easiest to find. I’ve seen a lot of people say to put a M5OD R1 my question is what are the options for vehicles/ years to pull one from? I know the Rangers used them up till then ended in 2011, cause I use one out of the the later years? And what all would I need to do to install it

also the motor needs a possible rebuild so im wondering if I could pull a 4.0l out of a new ranger and put that in if im already gonna have to pull the motor. What I’ve seen is you need just the engine itself, wiring harness and computer.

All of this stuff is getting older and harder to find. You might was well get a donor for the engine and the transmission all together. Then the computer will be correct for the 5 speed.

If you want a regular 4.0 with the M5OD 5 speed, you can find these from 1991 thru 2000. After that the 4.0 went to SOHC. But it did come with the HD version of the 5 speed with that SOHC version of the 4.0.

I got this info here. https://www.therangerstation.com/tech_library/ManualTransmission.shtml

Your best bet is a 90-99 4.0/5sp.

Basically any OHV 4.0. You can use a 5 sp off an SOHC but theres a hole or something slightly different on the bellhousing. I dont know all the details.

The 4.0 SOHC....you might as well go 302.
