1987 4wd 5-sp insurance

Insurance companies are a rip off for sure.

Insurance companies are a rip off for sure.

Until you need them. Imagine being at fault for an accident where somebody died, and having to pay $2,000,000 to the estate of the dead person, out of your own pocket.

I've paid $26,920 approximately in insurance premiums since I started driving in 1994. My insurance company has paid out, on my behalf, $27,200.00. $20,000 of that was for ONE accident. The vehicle that I owned that year, that was involved in that accident, had an insurance cost of $1,000.00 for the year. The other $7,200.00 was in a year where I paid $600.00 for insurance (for the year). So those two years, I came out WAY ahead. But, if I take the total claims, and the total premiums, I about break even, with the balance in my favour (more paid in claims than premiums.

In the last two years, I've driven 62.5 miles (or so). I've paid $1400.00 in insurance. But, I'd rather that, than have to pay out thousands of dollars if I have an accident where I'm at fault.

It depends on the insurance company too. State Farm only pays after you paid for the tow and only so much. With the traveling I do, I chose AAA, even though I've paid for and then some for a tow up to 200 miles.

AAA only uses certian tow outfits too.

My grandparents Durango died along the main drag in town. They had it sit there for an hour and a half waiting for the AAA approved tow truck to come down from Omaha and haul their car across town to a shop... like a 10 minute tow if you catch the stoplights wrong.

There are a couple really good local guys that we use all the time to haul smaller tractors in at work but AAA won't use them.

The just in case is the only good thing about them. Especially if you are on the hook for any injuries. We live in a no fault state. So, often times, we are using our own insurance regardless who is at fault. Thankfully, this last time when a lady clipped the front of my truck while I was sitting at a stop sign, her insurance paid for the damage. It also helped I had a police report that corroborated my story. That doesn't happen often here.

Cross your fingers, I have Grundy Worldwide for my collector cars, the Lincoln ‘sI have Grundy Worldwide for my collector cars, the Lincolns. They don’t usually cover pick up trucks, but I’m a long-term customer and I agreed to some restrictions. The reason I say cross your fingers, is if they let it go on the collector policy, it’s only a $75 (per year) addition to the $520 I pay for full coverage on the three Lincolns. See my new post on my 2987 4wd “Rick-storation” One of the reasons I think they will allow it is because I have the F250 on my regular daily policy, and I’m willing to sign I won’t do any work with the Ranger, it’s just a toy, and I won’t be charging through the woods. Not my thing, but you guys have fun!!!

And a thought about the Towing that some of my friends learned the hard way. They paid the extra for the deluxe Towing option, so if they got stuck far away, they could get towed all the way home. When the insurance companies describe this to you, it sounds like they’re going put on velvet gloves and put your baby on a truck and drive it back to Atlanta. What really happens, is the local AAA guy or whatever, tows it from point A to point B, and leaves it in a Wal-Mary parking lot, unattended, and the next guy tows it from point B to point C, and leaves it in a Walmart parking lot, Unattended, and then the next guy tows it from point C to point D etc. The Rolls Royce Owners Club sued an insurance company that will go unnamed, after two members had tens of thousand dollars in damage from local yokels who had no idea how to hook up the vintage massive cars.

May not be that big a deal on a Ford ranger, but my real point is read the policies, which is a huge pain in the butt, and get in writing how they are going to handle things that are important to you.

Thanks for all the info. The best I’ve been able to do in Atlanta for liability only, minimum coverage, minimum state law coverage, is about $65 a month. Full coverage is about $100 a month. I have bent a few fenders in my time, so I always like to have good coverage. Right now I’m hoping the Grundy Worldwide will work out. The gal told me if they won’t cover it as I’m redoing it, I can still reapply after it’s done. We’ll see what happens

Woof! I wonder how much is where you live and how much is past history? I pay a little over $59/month for full coverage on my 2011. The 2019 being new and still has a loan against it, not so well. That one is a little over $80/month.

Even if you're trying to save money don't get just liability. Comp costs peanuts and one broken window or windshield will save you enough to cover premiums for years. I backed into my parking spot at work one day, got out and shut the door-didn't slam it. As I was walking away I heard a "whump" and saw my drivers window explode into a pile of chunks. The glass cost me enough to have covered 6 years of comp. One of my former techs had a 72 Chevelle with a 454 that he'd just built parked beside the Firebird 400 T/A his son had built for the winter. They both cancelled the insurance and got nothing when the building burned. Comp would have paid for both cars.

I completely agree. The only reason I was considering only liability was just for the period of time while I’m fixing the thing up. I’ve always carried full coverage. I remember a VW beetle I had and the difference between liability and full coverage was $11 a year.

I owned 9 beetles when I was young and dumb and worked on many more, $11 exceeds the value of the car.

Mine was a “Rolls-wagon.” It had the fiberglass kit with the Rolls-Royce hood and trunk, and the fenders with the double headlights. Looks like a baby Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud. Everybody Has seen one, but they’re actually pretty rare. the guy who made the kit only made 38 hoods and only about 27 of the trunks and fenders before Rolls-Royce sued him. I found him and talked to him. The court let him sell the little bit he had, but he had to crush the molds with a Rolls representative watching.

I was in the Rolls Royce club at the time, found the fiberglass parts on a carcass in the scrap yard and bought a $1,000 1970 beetle to put it together for fun for the club. I spent about $1500 getting all the mechanicals worked out, and then we tried to mount the parts before paint, and they wouldn’t fit. I had a “beetle” and I needed a “super beetle.” So then I found a $1,000 super beetle, I think it was a 76, and this time I was smart enough to try the parts before spending any more money on it. But not too smart. The hood in the trunk fit so we marched on, only to find out that the fenders wouldn’t fit. The kit guy had fabricated all his stuff to fit a 1973 super beetle.

I think the original Super beetle was a 1970-72 with a flat windshield, but it was really just the old beetle with some beefed up trim. 73 was the first real super beetle with the curved windshield. They then realized that the 73 front end was too light and they beefed it up for 74 and later which changed the fender fit, and the hood fit a little bit. So then I had to go find only a 1973 super beetle, which I found for $2500. So, if you’re tracking my story, I spent $5500 plus to get three Volkswagens, and I still didn’t have the thing put together! Kind of amazing, because in the things I do for a living and things I have to do for family, etc., I’m meticulous to the point of being a pain in the ass. But when it comes to this car hobby I lose all sense. The good news is I sold the $1,000 Beatles for much more than I paid for them, and then the Rolls wagon won the People’s Choice Award at the regional Rolls Royce Owners Club meet, which really pissed off the snooty judges.

I have been blessed with some success from hard work, and I’ve been able to drive some pretty fancy cars and fast cars over the last 40 years, the rolls, Italian sports cars, etc. That little green rolls wagon by far was the biggest “chick magnet“ that I ever owned!!! Young girls, old girls, pretty girls ugly girls, small girls, big girls, you name it, not only would they smile, they would walk out on the road to the car and tap on the window to talk about it. My gal at the time absolutely hated it, she liked the fancier stuff, and then when she found out it was a chick magnet when she overheard my story one time, she said it had to go! What’s that old joke about the guy who gets married and he has a dog, and the wife says it’s me or the dog? And he puts an ad paper that he has a brunette who is house trained.... I got rid of the gal, kept the Rolls wagon.

The real Irony is 10 years later Volkswagen bought the “Rolls-Royce Motor Car Company, LTD” for 140 million, The company was worthless at that time, and they didn’t realize the name “Rolls Royce” didn’t come with the purchase. It was licensed from the aircraft engine and ship engine company which is the real Rolls Royce. BMW swooped in and bought the rights to the name for 30 or 40 million, Big legal battle for several years, and VW ended up with “Bentley” name and BMW ended up with “Rolls Royce.” Everyone in the Rolls club thinks the last Bentley Arnage that was sold 10 years later was the last true rolls.

And hey, I’m not trying to be arrogant with any of this stuff, I’m just telling the story. If I’m so wise, how did I end up with all these Fords????

And BTW, as regards the insurance, Grundy would not cover the Ranger truck, they don’t consider it a collectible. So I’m back on the hunt for a reasonable insurance again....

You saying you worked on nine Beatles when you were younger reminds me of my infatuation with Fiat X19’s for a while. I got to where I could pull the transmission out of the transaxle, take it apart and replace the reverse gear, and put it back together and put it back in the car in less than two hours. But do you know why? Anything you have to do every other month, you get good at it…
