I have a 1986 v6 ranger with a 5 speed transmission. Are the transmission between the 4 cylinder engine, and the 6 cylinder the same? Maybe a bell housing is the difference?

no. The 4 cylinders, the 3.0 v6, and the 4.0 v6 all have their own bellhousing. The 2.9 and 4.0 v6's use the same bellhousing though.

So... to answer your question....

A 5 speed from that vintage will either be a tk5 or an fm145, and both have removable bell housings that can be swapped.

However, you would be better off swapping in an m5od from a 2.9/4.0 (they have a non removable bell housing), but that would require changing clutch hydraulics, driveshaft mods, moving tranny crossmember, etc....)
