Just picked up an 86 ranger and this one has me a bit stumped as I'm trying to figure out the wiring and how it goes.

There are no lights plugged in right now. I crawled under the rear and unplugged the deutsch connector or whatever brand the grey connectors are to eliminate any possible bulb/socket issue from the back. That includes trailer wiring. Nothing is back there to cause issues.

Now I put in a 15 amp fuse and it blows as soon as I hit the brake pedal.

Looking at the wiring diagram it looks like if i hit the brake pedal it then goes through the hazard flasher, then out to the brake lights? Could the flasher have gone bad and is pulling extra amperage or grounded out? Its not a tilt column.

Any direction on where to look would be helpful.

Thanks!

No, the brake pedal is separate from Hazard Flasher, but they do share the same fuse, 15amp

Its just a general diagram not specific to 1986

Try another fuse but turn on Hazards, don't touch brake pedal, see if problem is in the Multi-function switch(turn signal switch)

If hazards work then problem could still be in the Multi-function switch, you will need to pull off the steering wheel covers and have a look at the connectors for Multi-function switch
There is just a short wire from brake pedal switch to Multi-function switch, light green wire, if could be shorted to ground under the dash or in the Multi-function switch

An OHM meter comes in handy for this, instead of getting new fuses

Hazards blew the fuse as well.

Took the cover off the steering column and didn't see anything. Unplugged the multi-function switch and stepped on the brake pedal and the fuse still popped.

So I assume that means its the wire between the brake pedal switch and the multi-function switch?

Just trying to wrap my head around how this circuit is ran.

Yes, that wire or the switch itself

Well I've swapped the switch out already. so I'm going to hope its the wire. HAHA
