my 1986, 2.9lit, v6, 4x4 ford ranger is shutting down for some reason. runs fine and everything but it begins to buck and then shuts off. Anybody know what it can be, I don't wanna be in the side of the road this holiday season. Thank you all! :bawling::bawling::bawling::bawling::bawling::bawling:

when was the last time the fuel filter and the general maintance was done?
may need a tune up with fuel filter, plugs, wires and just a cleanup and general maintance?

im with grey ghost, i had the same problem with my 86 but i got trash in tha tank and i got to change mine about every 20,000 miles

I've never changed the wires, just put in a new fuel filter, but i will put new plugs and wires now that you tell me. Thanks. any other things i can do?

TFI (ignition module) will cause this. How long does it run before it dies? Usually a bad TFI will keep the engine running until it heats up.

Probably a good idea to put this in the 2.9 section too.....

how many miles are on this v6? and what are you doing when it starts to "buck and shutsdown" ?

It usually runs for about 30-40 minutes then it shuts down. It has 93,000 original miles. When it bucks I press the accelerator pedal so it wont turn off, i just gas it to keep it alive.

I would say that there is water in your tank...and a whole bottle of heat will do the trick!!!! It's only a couple bucks.

i'd sertanly add some type of gas dryer and change the filter then if it dosen't help then look at the plugs and wires and the other areas mentioned

most people call it dry gas and there is all kinds of company's making it ..most gas stations sell the stuff..

just make sure u dont use too much or it will mess up the fuel lines, the have alcohol in them which is really not good to run in too large amounts, something cheap that is an idea and its ok to an extent but put a full bittle of rubbing alcohol in the tank next time you fill it up. and u can pick up a TFI md. for about $30 at advance auto...or an accel for there for about 70, i've changed mine a time or 2. be sure to get the ignition tool while ur there...trust me! lol

rubbing alcohol contains water don't add it to your gas tank

Try the TFI module before you go throwing heet in the thing. If it runs that long, the TFI module has a chance to warm up and crap out. You have the exact symptoms of a bad TFI.

Water in the fuel would make it run like crap all the time. I don't know why everyone keeps suggesting this. It's like saying that you need to have a code reader to find out why rust holes are forming above your wheel wells.
