1986 Ford Ranger 2.0 Idle/Stalling Problem Help!

what worked for me was to take a huge breaker bar and socket to the nut, put the truck in gear (and E-Brake on) and give a couple fast jerks counter clockwise, after that the pulley SHOULD just slide right off, if not the give it a couple wacks with a rubber mallet (dont hit to hard)

So there are no bolts or anything I should be removing? Technically, it should just slide out and off? Isn't this pulley attached/linked to the crankshaft?

woops yes there is a bolt (not a nut..darn typos) that screws into the crankshaft and the pulley is connected to the crank via a hmm dont remember the word..well a notch

Keyway is what it is attached to . Dont loose it or break it. Thats the word he was looking for.

Oh ok, I think I understand now (light bulb in head after several google searches or what a keyway/crankshaft looks like). So if I used this breaker bar and socket (like when I set TDC), but put the truck into gear, it should only crank so far until it stops. Once it stops, I should be able to apply enough force to unscrew that large bolt counter clockwise and remove the pulley?

Is my logic sound? I remember reading somewhere that said you absolutely do not want to crank this counter clockwise..

You can still move the truck when it is in gear buy turning the blot Ive done it. Make sure the truck cannot move. Put bricks, etc.. in front and behind the tires to help.

You have to turn it counter-clock wise to take the bolt off.

Oh and Ian, yes it is a bad idea to rotate a crank counterclockwise but so long as the truck is placed in gear and all the wheels are super blocked it wont turn enough to do much damage (its mainly because the timing would jump teeth, but i believe there was other logic to it too)

He doesn't have to worry about timing for the moment. Hes going to have to do that anyways due to the head already being taken off then put back on. Hes replacing the timing belt. I've turned mine backwards and it was fine.

I chocked the wheels and tried to crank it counter clockwise but couldn't ever get enough push behind it. It felt like it was on a band/spring. At no point did it ever just "stop" turning :/

you need an air compressor, and an impact gun, thats the easy way to take it off. or a long tube over the breaker bar.

Well, does the belt look like its in good condition, if so I would ignore it for now and get the truck running.

Timing belt looks/looked fine.. you guys freaked me out though!

Ok let's skip replacing that. Now that the engine is out of sync.

yeah if you didnt buy the belt already, just put the head on and call it a day.

I got the pulley off.. Tried it one more time and it came off easy. I want to make sure I'm setting everything to TDC. I put my finger over the #1 sparkplug and waiting till air forced my thumb off. That should be TDC correct?
