My uncle's 2.9L auto bronco randomly stopped starting for him. I looked at the starter and noticed there was a cable that had broken off above the starter, on the transmission. I'll be able to get better photos this weekend when I get out there, but was wondering if anyone knew what this cable could be and if its the source of the no crank. I'll try jumping the solenoid too when I'm there. There is fuel and spark.

I'll also pull out the broken piece of the connector so we can see what the plug looks like.

That doesn't look like a transmission to me that looks like the engine block. So that particular sensor, I believe, is an oil level sensor. It may be a knock sensor.

Knock sensor.

Wouldnt keep it from cranking or starting.

Thanks, it definitely does look like the knock sensor I'll get to look into it more either this weekend or next...any ideas what else could cause no crank no start? My main guess is the solenoid as it looked fairly rusty and there was no noise from it when I tried turning it over.

Its possible.

You can take a big channel lock and "jump" the solenoid from one big post to the other. That will tell you if it is bad

I never thought of using channel locks like that. I'll remember that.
