Hi: Here's the scenario: I have a 1986 Ranger 2.9. Recently I went through the fuel system (dual tanks) and replaced the filter, high pressure pump, pressure regulator, and even the tank selector switch. All the fuel stuff checked out.

I have had one of those hiccups that occurred over bumps. (recently read that the shielding for the spout may be a problem, and yes, my shielding in that loom is sketchy). So, I've replaced my TFI, switched out distributors as I had a spare. Also switched out coil. I have checked the voltage at the red coil wire... over 12 volts. The green side is over 9 volts. I supposed the ballast resistor is fine. Noticed some shorting out at the red wire... possible screwed up my TFI??? Ran codes for koeo... got a pass with 11. At koer, I only get 000, no codes. What I started with was a hiccup. Now I'm into full blown shake and bake. As I notice the wiring around the coil had some sparking, I suppose the TFI has to be replaced again. (I'm getting good at it). Dunno what to do about fixing the possible spout shielding wire issue--has anyone experienced that? I tell you, every car in the place is down. I'm waiting on the right parts for our SUV, and the old Corvette needs front brakes--I got the red brake light today. If I can any help from a Ranger bro', I'd really appreciate it. Thanks so much!

The "ballast resistor" is just there to keep noise out of the radio.

My 86 B2 also gives the same thing on a KOER test, but works fine with a KOEO test. Its running an early 87 ECM though. Im not sure if its an ECM issue...but ill be watching this thread.

As far as the shielding goes....i have no idea.

Personally i would pull the ECM and pull the case and see if theres any obvious failures

I’m moving this over to the 2.9 section…
