1986 2.3l starter

I have a 1986 ranger 4x4 5 speed and i think my starter has gone out.When i turn the key I can hear the starter turning but it doesnt engage.So what could this be?thanks

I'm old school so back in the day that was called the bendix drive. It's a solenoid that extends the gear drive to the flywheel. It's obviously not working. I'm also not sure if it's replacable.

I see that you can by the starter drive is that what you are talking about?
