1985 Ford Ranger Turbo Diesel Radiator

Trying to find a radiator for a 1985 Ford Ranger Turbo Diesel with a manual transmission. The P/N on the radiator is E57H SB which looks to cross reference to an E5TZ 8005-A. Anyone know where to find this radiator? Or is it typical to just plug the automatic transmission cooler lines?

Anyone know if the radiator in the diesel is different than the gasoline version?

I would assume they are the same maybe slight differences. I dont see why they would need to make a big change for the diesel over the 2.3 or 2.9 radiator. In fact i would probably just get a manual 2.9 rad. That should be sufficient.

To to a parts store website and compare them. I am pretty sure O'Reilly's gives dimensions of radiators online.

Looking at rock auto, using an 85 with a 2.8 and an 85 with the turbo diesel, looks like the radiator hose holes are opposite between the two.

OP, go to rockauto, they list a radiator for an 85 with a turbodiesel. If toy dont have an auto you can leave the fitting thy way they come. They are a sealed system within the radiator.

I put steel plugs in mine to keep debris from getting into the tranny cooler and corroding it from the inside out.

It isn't that I didn't trust the plastic plugs, I just didn't trust the plastic plugs. :icon_thumby:

Thanks for the quick responses. I just got the radiator out. It looks to be at least 2 row radiator (~2" thick). The dimensions are 23.5" x 18". O'reilly shows a single row radiator that's 18"x18". The mounts for the radiator are completely different as well. The current/stock radiator mounts with 4 bolts. The O'reilly radiator appears to have pins at the bottom and 2 bolts at the top.

I think I'm stuck having to buy a radiator and make different mounts. Anyone have recommendations for a universal radiator? Or maybe another good radiator that would be a fairly straight forward installation with some simple mounting brackets being fabricated? I'm thinking the radiator on the diesel was probably larger as diesels make more heat.

Most V8 swaps have the ports in the same location as stock. That is how Ford generally set up engines... the diesels in Rangers were not made by Ford.

I remember from my radiator searches that most GM's had the ports flipped around, might check that out.

What is wrong with the old one. Where I come from and even around here there are shops that can completely rebuild a radiator.

Around here shops throw their hands in the air and run away if it has plastic tanks.

So I ended up following ENJR44's advice. The rest of the radiator is in decent shape...just a bad core. Ended up taking to a local shop (quoted to be $544 with tax) which is high I realize. It's nice to put the original radiator back in and not have to modify mounts and/or cob on the vehicle.

Damn, where do you live? Must be a high rent area.
