I have a 1983 Ranger, I swaped a 1989 mustang 2.3 engine into it. I have to install an electric fuel pump and i was wondering where to wire it in so it only comes on when the key is in the on. I also switched the fuel injected back to carbureted and its running way to rich.. Any suggestions on a new carburetor?:icon_confused

I have an '87 block so I have to run an electric pump as well (no hole for a mechanical one).

I wired the pump with a 12-gauge wire and fuse right to the battery - a relay controlled by a line to the 'hot while running' wire in the steering column (can find which one with a multimeter) switches it on and off. An oil pressure switch or inertia switch in this circuit would be a good safety idea as well.

For what it's worth, the only electric pump I ever got to work was the low-pressure in-tank pump from the '87 Ranger. I even tried a giant Holley Blue racing pump and it just wouldn't deliver fuel with a single line. The factory in-tank (low pressure) pump works fine. I can confirm that the '87 sender works fine with my '83 fuel gauge. The catch? You'll need to swap to the EFI gas tank to use the factory low-pressure electric pump.

The only differences in the tanks seem to be related to body type - short bed/extended cab or long bed. An '86 long bed tank worked in my '83 long bed. An '87 short bed tank did not, it hits the crossmember.

Be careful with your fuel pressure running to the carb or you'll blow out needle valves.
