Hey guys I recently did a gear swap in my 87 Ranger. Unfortunately my t-case coincidentally decided it was done soon after. What my question is: is the 1354 a direct replacement for a 1350? But before you answer my 1350 is an Stx unit with a fixed front yoke. A little info its an 87 with a fm145 trans 8.8 rear and d35 front.. I would really like to know if this is a plug and play swap. So any info/advice you can give in appreciated.

Thank in advance

is the FM the short tranny? If it's the same length as the M5OD and A4LD then it's a direct bolt on, just grab the front drive shaft and shifter off of what you get the case from, worst case is you will have to screw with the front drive shaft.

I do believe the 145 is shorter.. actually I was more worried about the rear drive shaft. The possibility of having to have one made (double companions) and the t case bolt patterns .. I think I'm gonna hit up the bone yards on Sunday. So far this easy gear swap to make my truck a bit more useable has been nothing but weird issues lol..

PS your from Salem? I also live here lol

Nice, good to have more locals.

I have an electric 1354 sitting in my garage not being used... and a manual 1350 but it's the normal splined front output, and that's really wobbly... was keeping the 1350 around to make a doubler sometime in the future.

the rear outputs are the same, if you have the flange output now, it should be the same on a 1354, it was on mine, worst case just swap the outputs as they are the same spline and everything.

Thanks for the clarification.. looks like I'm off to the junkyard

Get the front driveshaft from the 1354 donor (I'm doubting your existing shaft will work, it'll probably be too short).

You'll need to have the 1354's driveshaft shortened 2" because of your FM145 trans.

I'm slightly confused is the 1354 shaft like super long? If mine might be too short and the 1354 would have to be shortened. Not sure I quite follow. I realize the front yoke will probably be larger on the 54 but I'm thinking ill swap the one I have for now. I guess ill get all I can tomorrow at the boneyard

the issue is the U joint yoke on the front output of the 1354 is larger than the U joint on your STX 1350, unless you got a conversion U joint or something if they make such an animal. I wonder if you took the first joint off of the dual cardan on the 1354 shaft if it would be the right length...

Yes but are they interchangeable like the rear ones? I have a feeling I'm bringing home all sorts of shit tomorrow lol

that I'm not completely sure of, to be safe I would grab the T case, shifter and front shaft, for tools all you should need are a 13mm socket and ratchet, 12pt 12mm wrench (take a little butane torch if you have one, it'll help for the rear drive shaft bolts), 12pt 8mm wrench, and T25 torx in something compact for the front drive shaft, and whatever size it takes for the two bolts on the shifter, one's huge and the other is probably 15mm. Bolt the front shaft back to the T case and say you couldn't get them apart, might get a better deal...

The 1354 does not have a big huge 'nose-cone' front output housing. Because of this the 1354's front yoke is much farther back.

So I'm going to ask the question in reverse:

I just bought an output shaft and tailhousing to convert my 1997 2wd 4r44e to a 4wd tranny, and just found a 1350 on Craigslist from an 84 ranger. So then will a 1350 mount up to my newer tranny?

NO, because you will still have a 2wd trans. :thefinger:

Yes sir, it will bolt right up. You may have to modify a shifter to work with that set-up if your using a manual shift 13-50.
