1 ton rated, but ranger size?

The bronco sport has a rear differential? :icon_confused:

I thought it was that "intelligent" AWD system that is front wheel drive and gives power to the rear when it feels like it and not a actual rear wheel drive based 4x4 system.

oh that’s right. It’s 4x4. Not heard mention of the intelligent part tho. The base engine is that little 3cyl with a decent 180hp.

How would it work without a differential in the rear?

I've only worked on a couple of AWD cars, but they both had rear differentials.

I think the comment was more along lines of… It’s odd that a fwd car has a rear diff.

I meant not a "normal" rear differential. AWD vehicles that are front wheel drive based have a transaxle up front with all the gearing in it already so the rear axle is just a little coupling thing not an actual normal big ring and pinion setup.

Fascinating. How do they handle turning when the AWD system is active?

The BS has 4wd lock and rear diff lock...

The Badlands and first edition have the 2.0T making 250hp and 277 lb-ft of torque.

@Dirtman - That Escape rear differential (right half of assembly) in your picture is the same Dana 28 found up front in Gen 1 & 2 RBV - normal ring and pinion. Ahead of the actual differential is a clutch mechanism (left half of assembly) preventing driveshaft bind between front and rear axles when driving on hard surfaces. Newer versions will lock clutches almost as good as mechanical set up.

If you meant that it isn't a solid axle, that is true. But even Expedition and Explorer gave up solid rear axles for ride comfort.

@sgtsandman The RV conversion with semi float rear axles had issues with wheel bearings, especially when dual rear wheels were installed - the whole outer tire is cantilevered. Toyota and Nissan replaced all their semi float axle with the full float from their Asia Pacific commercial truck and problems went away. The issue with small campers/RV is 80% of the cost is labour, so a Ranger/Tacoma/Frontier based camper costs 80% of that of full size.

Ranger is designed to compete with the S-10/Colorado - was 30 years ago, still is. If Tacoma was on RADAR, it would never have been allow to die in '12. Maverick is designed to compete with Hyundai Santa Cruz.

@snoranger - Does Detroit Locker in my old F100 count? My new F-150 has e-locker.

My wife's 2015 Escape does not have a rear differential...

But it is Front Wheel Drive....

My wife had a '13 escape, same generation, and it did have a rear differential for the AWD.

I know because it was a giant PITA when I had to replace the exhaust.
