1 ton, caged ranger

Well, my truck died on the way home today. Turns out a free battery out a parts truck is not very reliable.....

New battery...

Did you get the rest of the electrical issues fixed?

Love those everstarts. And those battery terminals are less than desireable.

Well I went by the shop today at school to hook my truck up to the D-tach and make sure there are no more charging problems...

Turns out there were, it said the alternator was bad. This vid was with the new alternator.

So we thought maybe that it was a bad re-man. Switched it out and same story, no charging at all. We used an excide tester, re-tested it with a d-tach and no dice. Still said bad alternator.

Summary, new battery, new alternator in the past 24 hours. Still no charging. I am taking it to a shop tomorrow for them to try to figure it out, we had no way of testing amperage output of the alt.

And pics for you guys...

On the plus side, I can R and R a starter in about 5 minutes...

Thanks for the offer but I am gunna build an aluminum dash

Sweet!

That cage is looking good. I want to put one in mine, but my cab has a bit of rust. I need to find a cleaner cab first then i will put a cage in.

And good luck on the charging issues! My 7.3L keeps eating alternators. At least Autozone keeps giving me free ones haha

Well we got it figured out, the sensing wire for the alt is bad. I also replaced some blown fuses, I now have 4wd, windshield wipers, and I am pretty sure that my gauges all work again I just need to hook them up and see.

Then the day took a turn for a worse, for some reason I was acting like a tard and didn't have the battery disconnected. I was moving some stuff out of the way to trace the wire back and the diode (if i have the term right) coming off of the battery dropped and arced off of a metal brake line, it put a pinhole in the line. Now I have to fix the brake line, it is right by the abs pump and in a weird spot so it will be a pita. Luckily I was working at the shop at the school at the time so I have someone there that knows way more than me helping me. The downside is that I work everyday this week and have a bunch of huge assignments due. So hopefully I will be driving next week. We have the parts store making a run to the shop tomorrow with some double flared brakeline.

Truck looks good.few questions tho.

Which bedline product did you use and how did you prep it?

That stick shit under there is a pain to get off isn't it.

I used baxter brand "rocker gaurd" same stuff I used for my fenders, its pretty cheap cause I get a discount there...

Well I got the brakeline fixed. We ended up just cutting the end of the brake line off right after the hole and re-flared it with the stock fitting and it still is long enough. I have a new sensing wire most of the way ran, I should be able to button it up and bleed the brakes by the weekend.....I hope...

There! I finally was able to rep you for the shock towers (and for having a killer truck):icon_thumby:

Got it all together and wired up. We were gunna bleed the brakes today but I drove it and don't notice any change from normal which is actually kinda weird. But I had ran out of time anyways so I will take it back to the shop next week and bleed them. Here are some pics.

I love having access to tools worth way more than my truck lol. Oh and i found out I still have some wiring issue because when it was plugged in it was saying that there was no connection\
proof that it moved

Then I took my dog to the park, she was stuck at the house for the past couple of days and was bored

So I put constant power to my alt. No prob right? That is the way that Daves race truck is and he has no problem with it, all it is is a sensing wire so there should be no draw from it. Woke up this morning with no start. 4.4 volts. Any ideas?

Obviously something's drawing it. Since you had your dashboard out, could something in the ingntion gotten nicked or cut and it's drawing power?

Gotta be a switched 12 volts. It will draw, turns the alternator on.

Well I didn't think that the sensing wire should be drawing power but obviously it is because nothing else has changed. I am probably going to buy a 12voltguy switch panel and wire the sensing wire into a switch. I still need to talk to Dave and see what he thinks, but I am guessing that is what it is.

Do you think a tiny nick in the wire would draw that much? Because I did open up a lot of the harness last week and it would be entirely possible that I accidentally nicked something

Edit: Just saw you comment kyle, so you are saying that it is the alt drawing? If so I will put a switch in
