hi ive got an 06 f150 5.4 auto it just started getting horiable milage between 6 and 8 mpg. its not running bad no check engine light and no stored codes. ive got no idea what it could be i dont know anything about these new engines so any help would be great thanks

What does the exhaust look/smell like?

Does the engine make any weird sounds?

smells like exhaust lol its not the cats if thats what your thinking they plugged up on me about a year ago and i had them replaced and you cant see it unless its cold when the motor warms up cant see anything. the motor does make a really bad knocking sound occaissionally when backing up very slow i notice it alot when im backing up a trailer slowly. just stab the gas and it will stop not sure what that is either

What made the cats plug up? Did you put new cats on or are you catless?

The cam phasers are getting good about going out of them, they make a really bad knocking sound, I don't know if they would have THAT big of an effect on milage though.

not sure what made them plug up it wouldnt run worth sh*t and i took it to a garage they fixed it put new ones on from ford $400 each

what r cam phasers????

They change the cam timing, when they go bad they make a rattling knocking sound.

Something made the cats plug up, it doesn't just happen.

does the gas tank have a hole in it?
fuel line lose somewhere? i've seen a couple newer f150's have issues here...
regulator leaking?

i dont think so it wont lose any furl over night or anything if its got half a tank when i park it it still has half a tank in the morning. what regulator are you talking about leaking?? i was thinking maybe changing all the filters in it air filter, fuel filter its only got 87000 miles wouldnt think that it would be that but worth a try

How's the coil packs? The 5.4's have a bad rep. A lot of people will say they should be changed at 75,000 miles or so.

Our 03 (different story) had 154,000 on stock plugs and coil packs... It was a mess. But it wasn't that bad.

If you let the plugs run forever it will overstress the coilpacks. I changed the plugs at 75k in my '02 and it still runs like a champ at 90k.

The only reason they get a bad rep is because people think they should run forever with no maintenance, they are more of a precision engine than most and don't like that.

I'd get your cam phasers checked. your truck is at the right age to have the issue. its something that over time can blow your motor if not corrected in time. also with your valves out of sync, it will dump fuel into your exhaust, which will contribute to clogging your cats. if your really unlucky, you could put a valve through a piston and buh bye 5.4. they arent cheap to fix. friend just traded his 150 for a 2011 ranger because of the cam phasers.

wow these phasers seam like they were a GREAT idea on fords part... NOT i bought this truck new thinking it'd go forever i mean very little maintence compaired to all my old piles of junk that needed work all the time.. not the case i guess

They do give it a lot more power and better milage when they work however.
