04 to 11 2.3 ranger engines interchangable?

so my dads ranger is an 04 5 speed 2.3 dual cam standard cab. The engine needs replaced, low compression on a cylinder. I was told by ford that the 04 and 05 to 11 ranger engines are different so whats the difference cause they look identical. Are they interchangable cause we cant find many 03 to 04 2.3 engines. only one we found is from an automatic with 88,000 miles for $850 plus tax which seems a little high to me?
