any opinions on whether I should drain the case and then put a quart of so in and re-drain in an attempt to get any "extra crud" out of the tranny?
I suppose you could. Unlike an automatic, there really isn't any passages or a torque converter to trap fluid in it. The fill plug is right above the drain plug. So, I'm not sure how much benefit would be realized.

I bought this truck for my son 20+ years ago when he was headed to college. About a year ago, I was literally popping open my computer to take a look at craigslist and truck trader to see if I could find something to haul shit around and have something to play with - and he texted me from up in the Bay Area (I'm in LA) and said " Hey Dad, this truck just sits out in front of my house and I almost never drive it - do you want it back? Pretty good boy, right?

All of that to say, I don't have the maintenance records on it, but I would venture to say that that fluid has NOT been replaced recently. I am confident of my abilities to drop it and fix whatever is needed - but swapping out the fluid sounds like GREAT place to start.

I will do that and keep you posted
Other than an annoying and shitty experience with a Harbor Freight transfer pump that didn't pump, the transmission fluid change went fine...used Castrol Mercon V (is that pronounced "vee" or "5" ?) There were only minor shavings on the drain plug magnet.

I would say that 80 to 85% of the shifting issues were solved. I drove it down to Santa Monica and back through ugly traffic....so I essentially rowed my through traffic using the gear shift - previously it did not like the first to second and back to first transitions.....I probably didthat 100 times today and it was pretty smooth.

I don't have any experience with the truck except for the last 10K miles......the shifting isn't exactly silky.....but is it pretty amazing for 202,0000 miles.

Having the correct level of fresh proper lubricant works wonders sometimes for shift feel. I know if fixed a couple by doing just that.
