I have an 85 Ranger XLT 4x4 regular cab, long bed with the 2.8L and manual trans. I want to replace the fuel tank sending unit to get a more accurate tank level reading. I see two options on RockAuto. From the look of them, they are both the same style, but state they are for different tank locations. Neither look like OEM E5TZ-9275-M posted in another thread. Looking at LMC Truck, it again looks like the like the two on RockAuto. Anyone know if Dorman 692-249 will work?

Thank you for assistance.

Just a guess... but I'm thinking there is two versions because of dual tanks.

Neither of those two will work for you. How inaccurate is your existing gauge?

On RockAuto, the Dorman is listed for a tank behind the axle.

Showing empty after less than 50 miles and was varying the whole drive home after I bought it. I know the tank was full because I didn't trust the hand and wanted to make sure I had enough gas to get home. I might have put a gallon in it before is splashed a little out and stopped. Have driven it a bit more since then, hauling a gas can with a few gallons in it just in case.

It does sound like it’s time to replace the sending unit; I’m not aware of an aftermarket unit that will work for this application.

Anyone think it would be possible to get either of the aftermarket units and just transfer the needed parts over to the factory one? I'm getting fuel, and as long as it isn't in bad shape, all it needs is the level sending portion.

You should be able to do that as long as it's the same style. I have swapped the float assembly from one to another several times, it just matters that it's the same style because sometimes the little resistor grid electronic thing doesn't have the same size of float arm travel...hope that makes sense. If it's not matched to what you have pretty close, it might not read correct at the lower and upper levels of the gauge.

I expect it would take some rigging to get it on and held in place. The focus would be on getting the lower level set corrextly. Being close to empty is all I want to know.

Would you be interested in a new old stock replacement?

I don’t have one at all and need one. I have some parts store junk with self tapping screws and an o ring in it.
