My 04 Ranger with a 4.0 stalled when I was taking off from a red light. When I tried to start it, didn't do anything. I tried a few times and on the last try I let the key turn back from the start position just a little and it started. Anyone have an idea what causes this problem? It did it once before, but it took several weeks to do it again. Is it the ignition switch in the steering collum or is it the other ignition switch under the dash by the steering collum?

I am not familiar with your year, but I would start with the electrical part of the switch.

I'm not sure which switch is the electrical switch. The one under the dash has a plug on it but I inspected it yesterday and I can't see any obvious problems. I replaced it once, but I don't remember what the problem was then. Do those wear out easy because it's only been a couple of years? My problem is when I turn the key to start the motor it doesn't do anything until I back the key up a very small amount then it starts. I took the keyed ignition out today and I didn't see anything that might cause that problem but remember I don't know what I'm looking for.

I would replace the electrical part again. Aftermarket parts are not as good as the original OEM, so I would not be surprised it only lasted a couple of years.

Success, I replaced the ignition switch and that seems to have fixed the issue. Thanks to franklin2 for telling me twice to replace the ignition switch. Am I the only one that thought most vehicles had the power going through the ignition switch with the key in it that is now on the steering column?
