2009 Ranger AC compressor on all the time

@Smitty316 Sorry I didn’t get back to you last night but I drove my truck to work this morning and my AC compressor is engaged in every position except for face only or feet only and the obvious off position. All others kick in the compressor. Does your climate control look like mine on your 2011?

You sure about that? From my experience (mainly drawn from other Fords, as I've not had a Ranger newer than '91):.

Quite so, personal experience (my vehicle), service manual also dictates the same. I personally do not like the idea that the compressor *needs* to cycle in all those positions (when not in A/C) but some engineer at Ford felt it is necessary to.

Defrost is good enough for my purposes.

I'll check again but i'm 99% sure that mine runs in every position other than the first click to the left (Vent only). I've been wanting to add a separate on off switch to disable the AC compressor...especially in the winter. I want to run the windshield defrost to provide heat only without the AC compressor needing to be on. I understand how defrost works in the non winter months by removing moisture...actually that's AC's primary function as dry air is easier to cool and moist air is easier to heat. But it's silly to have a compressor running by default on our vehicles when we want the opposite. Gimme a pre 94 Ranger with the button like most cars. My VW and every other car I've ever owned has had the option to engage the AC with a button...but Ford has to be a different bird.

Yes, That's the same as mine and that's exactly the way mine works. I managed to catch an old friend who works as a mechanic (Old= lots of experience). He explained to me how it works. He said that when the outside temps drop below a certain point, the Freon no longer builds up enough pressure to act as a coolant. That's why the "duel" position also works for heat. I'm just glad that it's not something that needs repair. Thanks again for looking into this for me. Smitty

I don't remember the AC being engaged in the dash and feet setting that early in the Rangers. My 2011 is like that though. Dash only and feet only are the only non-AC engaged settings.

Windshield/Floor split or dash/floor split is the only options. There is a bit of air leakage to the floor when in windshield only if the feet get too cool.

My Corolla can be set to FULL FEET. I love it. I have buttons for "A/C" and "Recirculate" that can be activated/deactivated in any mode except defrost.

Hondas and Nissans have that too. At least the CR-Vs I owned and the Civic and Accord I worked on did. And the Nissan Vera the girlfriend has the recirculation and AC buttons separate from the vent and heat controls.

As does my Jetta. You get spoiled with having full control over your climate control. Vent, recirculate, ac on off…whatever I need is available. I’m still going to put the ac compressor on a separate switch through a relay. Just need to draw up a diagram of how I need to wire it up and get to it.
