Yeah, the for V10 is small for a V10. They like to spin to get the power, hence the short gears.
Right. The 5.4 is the same way. But strange givin their massive stroke (4.125)

Don’t rule out a V10. I hear the modular v10 with the right gears does well under load.
I also hear great things about the dodge v10.
I used to work for a company building furniture and I'd do deliveries and cabinet installs from time to time. They had a super duty with the V10 and a car hauler. We used to have contests to see who could get the worst mileage. I remember getting it to average around 4.X, lots of fun when you're a dumb kid that isn't paying for fuel. That said, it never had a problem pulling anything.

I forgot youre in the mountains...

But it depends on what youre towing. Ive towed 5 or 6k with mine through kentucky and i didnt really notice any loss of power. Out in the rockys would be a different story though.

If you dont see yourself ever loading up over say...8500lbs....i wouldnt rule out a 460. The diesel would do better at high elevations assuming its turbo. I should add the 460 would drag 10 or 11k thru mountains...but over 8500 or so i think the diesel would start to shine. On flat ground/small hills i doubt youd notice any difference in power between the two

The 460 and PSD Obs Trucks were rated exactly the same weights for towing.

I get 12-13mpg empty and around 9-10 towing. The PSD will do somewhat better then that...but the 460 will be better empty and pretty equal powerwise when towing compared to a early PSD...atleast in normalish terrain.

But also remember...you can rebuild a 460 for what injectors or a turbo will cost on a 7.3...plus diesel is more expensive, as are general maintence.

The V10 *needs* 4.30 gears to get the full affect. The couple V10s ive driven havent really impressed me...they felt alot mushyier off the line then my 460 but up top a bit stronger.
You must drive extremely slow or have the lightest 460 truck around to get that kind of MPG out of it. 10 MPG unloaded and 5-6 MPG towing is what we normally got.

Nah....i run 60 and accelerate about normally. 97 ext cab long bed with an E4OD and 4.10's, 2wd.

I will say there were a couple times i got disgusting mileage. Usually headwind related.

Coming back from up north with my trailer loaded to the gills with wet pine trunks and the bed loaded to the top of the cab with various chunks of firewood, running in a 55-60mph headwind running 70 i got 6.2mpg. After i slowed to 60 it went back up around 10

But thats a rarity. Even towing my camper with O/D off, ac on, 65mph id get 9.

Average towing i get 10 all day

I did see a cool truck in Marketplace a few weeks ago. Seems to be gone now. It was a Ford/International. Bigger body size similar to an F600 or something. I think it was a late 70’s model. Crew cab with a pickup style bed. Had a Detroit in it. I think it was something like a 471T. Would have been entertaining. They wanted $23k. It appeared to be in great shape.

found it “pending”

The Detroit would be fun. I can remember back when I worked beet harvest every fall I could recognize the farm trucks running Detroit two-strokes coming from a couple miles away. I loved that sound. At a local steam show they had a dozer, a Euclid TC-12, with two 12-71s. What a glorious racket that thing made. They definitely earned the screamin' Jimmy nickname.

A few years ago I found a listing on CL for a couple 3-53s. I think they were surplus that were used in generators. I thought how cool it would be to put one in my Ranger. Then I found out they're nearly 1k lbs dry and abandoned the idea. I should have bought one of them anyway just to put it on a stand and annoy the neighbors. There's a video on the internets somewhere of a guy that put one in an Apache pickup.

So you drive extremely slow then, that answers it.

I drive the speed limit or 5 over and accelerate with traffic.

No reason to run 90 everywhere

You get there 50% faster than at 60 mph.
Yeah...did you account for the 15 minutes you spend on the shoulder with a trooper behind you?

Or stopping for gas twice as much

Also, if the speed limits 55 and you got popped doing 90 you might be there for more then 15 minutes. In Pa 35 over the speed limit is 6 points, meaning they can take your license away on the spot if they want to, if your nice they will wait until you're actually "convicted" to take your license away.

Well, for better or for worse, I got the 2002, F350 Superdoody. Cosmetically, it's "not great". Mechanically, it seems to be pretty darn ok. Starts fine, idles nice. Pulls pretty good. If I don't look at the speedo, it feels like I'm going slow. But this thing actually gets up to speed pretty nicely for what it is. I had it up to 85 on the interstate a few times coming home and that was towing the Fun50 on the trailer. Steering feels almost better than any Ford truck I've ever driven. A/C needs something. The air seems to get cold. But it doesn't blow hard out the vents. I'll have to check the blower FAN resistor and take it from there. Might be trash blocking the fan or evaporator coil. Needs tires. 2 of them are home made racing slicks. The hole in the hitch receiver where you put the pin is wallowed out like a 90 yr old prosti... I better not finish that analogy. Small dents all over it. Holes in the interior bed walls. Ut no rust detected anywhere yet. NONE. Headliner needs replacing. Steering wheel needs replacing (left side cruise buttons gone and air bag cover loose). I need to replace/repair the trailer wiring harness. I drove almost 2 hours home with no trailer lights or trailer brakes. Oh. And the brakes are awesome. This thing stopped with the trailer better than the Fun50 does with trailer brakes on full boost.

But... no looseness in the driveline. Carrier bearing seems OK (10 miles of drive shaft under there) and no play in the pinion or u-joints. Didn't see any major leaks anywhere. Worst keak seems to be around some fuel system components near the front top of the engine. Coolant temperature and transmission temperature stayed in the middle all the way home. That was towing on interstate in upper 80 degree ambient.

It's what I would call a base utility model. Just perfect. Arm-power windows. Finger-power door locks. Basic am/fm radio. The fanciest luxury on this thing uis cruise control, which I didn't even try yet. No PATS, just one simple, old-fashioned no-chip key. It does have carpet. He swapped out the seats for front buckets with center seat/fold-down arm rest. The rear seat is pretty nice when you lift the bottom up, there is some kind of metal platform that folds out to cover the floor.

Oh yeah. He was asking $5200. I got him down to 4800. That's with salvage title.

So. It's ugly. I can live with that. At least Rusty can't give me a hard time. Better pictures later.

Ok. Just figured out it's an F250 superduty. Not F350. Learned this while reading the door sticker and checking the axle code - C1 = 3.73 gears, limited slip, used on F250s and Excursions.
