I just installed a JVC stereo from another car, where it worked fine, to my Ranger. Printed off the schematic from here so I had all the color codes and such(why couldn't Ford stick to a more universal color code on their audio, lol) then wired up my pig-tail. Stereo only has the one ground wire which was originally set up with an eyelet to secure to a metal part of the dash, but given the harness had a ground wire I connected there instead.(was that the correct thing to do?)
With the ignition off, when I plugged in the antenna there was a pop from the right front speaker and otherwise no sound. Upon playing a little with the antenna cable I got static then stations, but nothing out of the right front speaker. Other speakers sound fine.
Played with it for a while. Set the clock and my pre-sets, then checked for power to the RF speaker. Had dim light at probe on both wires so I am assuming the speaker is just bad. Oh, while driving around if I had the fade to the front I could hear some crackling and popping in the right too.
The only other thing that is goofy is, the stereo comes on consistently, but intermittently the sound goes off, like it is muted only there is no mute button. Would a weak ground cause this and should I make a ground strap frm the stereo body to the dash frame? Any help on this would be appreciated.
