A very... very... sad turn of events... :/

I did, still got the slightly dented hood too. :icon_thumby:

I think they paid me $1700 for it, bought it back for $300... not bad for a $1200 truck.

Well im hoping to get a decent amount if they do write it off. However, i will happily let them fix and paint it up and nice and new with parts that arent rusted/dented :P Lol like i said, as long as i end up breaking even i think im pretty much good

Hey neighbour! (I'm in Regina). Sorry to hear about your truck.

I'm also sorry to have to tell you that SGI will write off anything over 5 yrs old. They will value that at about $1000, give or take.

As for buying it back and fixing it, SGI has some screwy rules. Once they write a vehicle off, no matter what the damage, the whole vehicle has to pass a safety inspection in order to plate it again, and they get stupid about what doesnt pass!
You can pretty much count on replacing steering, shocks, brakes, any leaks, windshield, u-joints, They wont even pass it with rust on the body!

I have a diesel pickup shop and see accident victoms and out-of-province trucks (also require safety's) all the time, usually it costs more to fix than buying new.

Have a look at SGI salvage site, click on the vehicle name and it will bring up pics. You can see some fairly new, "minor damage" vehicles that have been written off. Especially the "1987 GMC" near the end of the list. Bent rear bumper=write-off!

Ya... i know... but i was hoping it wouldnt be too bad...lol I love this truck, but on top of this new damage ive got a windesheild that will need replacing, muffler system isnt done yet, and rust all the way thru my wheel wells. So you think theres any chance of me breaking somewhere close to even? i wouldnt mind spending a little more than i get from the truck if it means im getting new parts on it anyways. But idk.. Maybe ill have to save and find a better truck.. :/

She is totally at fault and is taking full responsibilty for it. And im lucky as hell it just happened to be with someone responsible enough to not try and screw me over. That was the only reason you had behind me getting screwed right? lol

Yeah, but just be careful thats how it was for me and then a week later stuff started going down...

Oh ya, i know what you mean> never been in an acsident before (im 16) so i had NO clue what info i needed and such. So i called my dad to come down and she ended up getting her father as well. Then we called the police cuz her car wasnt driveable and the cop got me everything.

So about my truck getting fixed... What are everyone's opinions on what i should do? I love this truck and definately want to keep it, but i dont have any money right now to do a bunch of extra stuff to get it perfect for the inspections. Odds are that they will total loss it, so i will buy it back getting maybe something like a grand for it. Then i have to get all the work from the acsident done, replace windsheild, do exhaust, and any of the other fun things they are bound to shove in my face to get it inspected. :/

And i didnt mention i have no real way to do this stuff myself. :/ Havent had the oportunity to do much with my truck before so i wouldnt even know where to start with taking off/putting on fenders or anything. And no real tools either. Gonna make this alot of fun lol:annoyed:

Yeah well you would probably get about a grand for the truck and then buy it back for like 300 bucks so you would have 700 to get it all fixed up. Or you could not put it under insurace and it would not be totalled so there would be no recon title on it but you would more then likely have no money to fix it.

Personally i would say take the total and get a reconstruction title cause you will probably hold onto the vehicle for a while and the recon title won't affect the resell to bad seeing as its not worth too much already. Then take the money you get and fix up the most important things for the inspection and leave the body and bumper alone until it passes.

I'd be inclined to buy another ranger and keep this one for parts...or sell parts off it. I've had to do the salvage inspection deal here in Alberta and it cost me C$2,000.00 plus my own labor. The truck was given to me and the body was in excellent shape, you wouldn't have thought it was going to cost anywhere close to that much. It was C$360.00 just for the salvage inspection, BEFORE any work was done. I ended up with a nice looking truck that was worth about C$2,000.00. I don't think I would do it again, though I did learn some. If you can't do the work yourself, you'll end up paying way to much. My C$.02.
Whatever you decide, good luck,

Richard

PS; I had a different truck written off a couple of months ago, they offered me C$3,300.00 cash or C$3,000.00 cash plus my truck back. It seems that the buy back in my case is pretty close to the 10% mentioned earlier in this thread. That would mean C$100.00 buy back if your truck is worth C$1,000.00

Yes... But my truck isnt exactly the best condition truck. For parts, the fronts smashed up, i have bad rust on the wheel wells, tailgate is dented and some rust showing. Its a great truck and i wasnt worried about any of the stuff that was wrong before because it didnt effect anything.

I looked around a bit on the online classifieds around Saskatchewan and couldnt find a thing in my price range. I definately want a ranger again, 4x4 for sure. So basically i have to save for a while and get a couple grand goign again, then wait forever untill a decent 2nd gen comes thru... Not too keen on the round-ness of 3rd gens, but i guess they could be done up somewhat nicely...

Overall a fun situation to be in, especailly when you've done nothing to cause it in the first place lol. When is it that they take my truck? Right after my apointment to get the damage apraised? Like... I still kinda want to have that false hope that they will fixe the damage and let me keep my truck lol. I'll have to take my stereo and cone intake out if they are going to total it

All this ^^^ will have to be fixed for the inspection. As well, you might as well replace the front rotors, pads, flex lines, plan on doing ball joints, e-brake lines that show wear, rear brake drums and pads-replaced, exhaust system, etc. Like I said, or maybe I didn't, you will be rebuilding EVERYTHING to as new condition. You have to figure what that's going to cost and if it's worth it to you. A few months after going through the safety inspection, my a4ld crapped out. It was my work truck so I had the trans rebuilt.... it cost me C$2,000.00. Now I'm into the truck for C$4,000.00, more than what it's worth. A year and a half later, the motor blew.... it sits out back now. Your inspection process might be different, but the mechanic won't let anything slide because his license is on the line, and the government does check. Besides, the shop can make money from what they find wrong with the truck, so everything will be wrong [my experience...and I've done this twice, once in B.C.,many years ago,and once in AB, just a few years ago.

Im not worked up as much as bummed. And scared of keeping it and fixing it with my own cash if something big that makes it not worth fixing turns up. This is my first vehicle, i have big plans for it and love driving it. It astounded me what it could do as a stock 20+ year old truck. Im not freakin out, just bummed and sketched a bit.

You don't know anybody with a basic set of tools?

My uncle has some tools for basic stuff like replacing brakes or random things around the engine. But hes just more of a regular matenience guy, not bodywork. The bodywork isnt what is scaring me, its the inspection i will need after it being totaled off. Like alwaysfloored is saying, they are tight-asses about this and my truck at 20+ years old is likely to need some stuff. :/

Well idk... I guess the only thing i can do right now is wait untill the 22nd for them to let me know what they plan to do. When is it that i will need to empty out all my stuff if it is going to stay in the wrecker? Like i need to remove my stereo, but wouldnt want to until i know for sure im not keeping the truck. Do they just take it right after the inspection and not give it back? Or do they do the inspection and tell me to bring it to the wrecker?

Exactly why I said try and keep it away from insurance. Replacing what you need to replace is easy, mostly just need an 8mm socket, 10mm socket, and an assortment of screwdrivers. Also pry bar and/or a hammer to straighten your core support. It's not going to be worth going through the salvage title, no offense...

Ya i know what you mean. But right from the start the cops were involved. This was my first accsident so i was under the impression that i would at least break even since this is in no way my fault. Sucks big time that for no reason at all i loose my truck lol. Either that or spend ALOT on just making everything like new for the inspection people. :/

Just because there is now a claim doesn't mean you're hooped. You still have options. I was involved in a hit and run and I made a claim, thinking that was what I should do simply because it was a hit and run. When they told me they were going to write my truck off for a bent bumper, I told them I no longer wanted them to fix it. They said alrighty then, see ya.

Sucky situation though for sure. If I still lived down in Assiniboia I'd be giving you a hand tearing that thing down right now!
