good news is...I done put 1/2" more of biceps on my arms in 3 weeks.....that 13" Grant steering wheel on top of that manual steering box makes for some good exercise in town, but it's great going down the hi-way.....I likes it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No new stuff yet.....no mods yet.....still running the roads in the "36 doing Christmas stuff......................

Right on, have a merry christmas DG:headbang:(Imagine him in a santa hat)

Topher.......the script is kinda small.......does it say...................................

Santa is................Mental ?

:icon_rofl:

EDIT: I did manage to sneak out of the house while she was getting ready & I pulled the power valve outta the Holley 4 bbl---plugged the hole.

I finally realized those black smoke-rings coming outta the dual exhausts was all that half burned gasoline...because I never installed a "bigger" cam.....

also.....the needle on the fuel gauge doesn't move to the left at a rapid pace every time I leave a traffic lite any more....LOL

Hey DG, I am the guy thats working on the std cab 36 kit and saw that you swapped in the manual steering box. Hows it been working out with the extra weight of the V8? How bad is it when you are trying to park in a tight space?

Also how much did it improve the clearance where the front fender almost contacts the frame / steering box? I am still working on trying to set the body as low on the frame as I can, but that area seems to be the last hold up. Can you get a few pictures with the new box on place? Thanks and Merry Christmas

good to hear from you.....I got a really good manual box with the pitman arm still bolted to it.
the box bolted right in....and the I-DID-IT steering shaft & flex-joints connect to it with no problem.
You have to swing wide to park in a tight space & it takes some getting used to the extra turns you have to make with the steering wheel....but I'm 60 years old and am GLAD I made the swap after fighting leaking hoses/leaking gear-box/leaking P/s pump....etc.
My biceps are getting in shape again.....LOL.

I'll go take a few pics now.....Keep after me if you ask for something & I ferget to reply....LOL

EDIT: I'm back......here's a pic looking at the box from the firewall.....

002-13.jpg

there's lots more room now & half the weight....I also had to idle the engine down from 1,000 rpm to 700 rpm after removing all the P/S junk.....(seems like it even barks the tires going into 2nd gear a little easier)....LOL

BUT.....the box wasn't the biggest problem for me.....I could only lower the fenders until they touched the top of the frame(chassis)....if you look closely.....you can see on the left side of the box that the inner fender splash shield & the innner side of the fender are resting on the top of the chassis!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That's what stopped me from going any lower with the body parts.......anyway....the cab will give you a lot of problems rubbing on the top of the A/T as it is.....I had to notch out the cab tunnel & raise it 2 0r 3" to clear the transmission & the distributor (no big deal with fiberglass though)....

You can see the old P/S pump mounting bracket to the upper right of the box.....imagine how close the P/S pump & pulley was to the old P/S box---1/8" !!!!!!

When you modify 1 thing like lowering the body more than an inch or two....you end up having to modify 3 other things that cause new problems....but don't let that get to you.....LOL

Keep checking out my build pics & write down "sections" & post #'s of different modifications.......that way, they won't be so hard to find when you need to look at them.....LOL

Thanks for the reply. It looks like that part of the fender is sitting on top of the frame where one of the bolts that holds the box in is at. Is that correct? While moving the cab around I found that I could push it a little more foward and the fender was resting on the frame in front of the gearbox and the big end of the ps gearbox. So I was thinking with the manual box thats shorter in the front, I could notch the frame in that area to get me a inch or two for the fender. I am definately going to cut out the floor for the transmission. Any more pictures would be great.

And since I havent bought a steering wheel yet, maybe I can find a big (15"+) cool looking one that would help with the steering. Thanks

Yep....going forward a little with the fenders will help....BUT watch out that you keep the wheel CENTERED in the wheel well....LOL...I learned the hard way on that modification!!!!!!

And DON"T notch any body parts....that's a last resort only after you've got the COMPLETE body as low as you can.....You want to be able to lower the WHOLE BODY AT THE SAME TIME to avoid running into any B I G problems....it takes time but it's the best way.....

I understand. Thats the way I have been working on it, a little at a time. I can get the cab down to the frame but the front end is the hold up. So if I can gain a little more there I would be able to bring the cab down a little more.

I was thinking of notching the frame a little bit, I dont think there is any room on the fender to notch.

I will keep plugging away at it.

Yep.....I notched the fender "flanges" 1/2 inch just to keep em from rubbing on the top of the frame....

You sure could notch the frame to get the fenders lower....i think....will the P/S box be in the way????....just wondering....hope not!

merry christmas 2010

jesus loves ya!
