Just Plain Stupied

I'm back in action.....it has been really rough the last few months, but the Ranger kept going to give me a rest & time to get myself back together.

So....there's gooood news.....the OEM power steering box finally gave out after being resealed/adjusted/re-adjusted/re hosed/re-adjusted until there's no turns left on the adjusting screw!!!

That means I get an easy job of laying on my back and replacing the original box...it took about 45 minutes to pull the OEM box out on the left side of the pic.....

The "new oem box" on the right side above came out of an '87 Ranger at the local U-Pull-It....tokk about 45 minutes to find a box that was in goood shape & another 45 minutes + $69 to get it thru customs....waaaahahhaaaa.

I decided to take the whole assembly since it's a MANUAL box (I need the exercise & don't plan on buying any more P/S fluid....LOL)

Now for about $5 worth of top quality automotive finish in a spray can......the paint job oughta be dry by the time I post the pics...ain't it a beauty...I have learned that theres 2 kinds of power-steering boxes--those that leak & those that leak a lot....problem solved!

Here's a pic of the hole/& with the manual box mocked-up......

I'll just run the P/S pump pressure hose to the return port until I buy a new serpentine short belt...I oughta gain 40 h.p. by free-wheeeling the p/s pump...waaahaqhaqhaq (oops--i'm laffing in arab now)

Welllllll.......back to the go-rajjjjj

It's Monday and the "New" manual steering box is installed! The steering wheel is 180* out--I'll just remove the nut & rotate it since it's a
Grant wheel. on second thought...I'll just pop the V8 horn button out & pop it back in place correctly

No more wandering or under=steering! As far as muscle power--It takes a little more effort to squeeze into a parking spot, but the swap was worth it.

Annnnnnd.....this is the first time in 5 years that I didn't have to clean up a puddle of P/S fluid the next morning .....waaaahahahahhaaaaaa

We got your back DG, just take it easy and keep us posted.

thanks men.....I drove it to town today, but it kept wandering all over.....:icon_confused:

so I got on a nice straight road and let go of the steering wheel.....:icon_surprised:

it went straight down the road/no wandering/no nothing........:icon_confused:

it was at that exact moment that I realized.....:icon_idea:

I had driven it so long with a worn steering box that I kept over correcting the steering wheel/new manual box out of habit .......:icon_twisted:. duuuuuuuuhhhhhhhhh:icon_bounceblue:

:icon_rofl:

can anybody say Bat-Turn!!!!!!!!

I finally got around to removing the power steering pump & installing a shorter drive-belt.....no-o-o-o-o problem....

however............

the tensioner pully pushed the upper part of the belt against the lower part of the belt where it went around the alternator pulley when accelerating.....go figure..

so...I fabricated 2 1/2" bracket extension on the upper alternator mounting bolt & got an inch clearance between the upper/lower belt

My fingers under the tensioner pulley show the extra clearance I gained by adding the bracket-spacer (the belt was actually chaffing against itself at the spot where my fingers now are at)which means no more belt-rubbing & no more smoke rolling out from under the hood on accelleration......

:worthless: (o.k....put the signs down....I added the pics!)
