Tom this is just looking to be amazing! I'm stoked to see the pipes go on

ya,i'm looking forward to that too.i've had the chunk of pipe for the rockers for weeks now,but i didn't want to get fitting it till i had the sidepipes,so now i have all kinds of stuff to do.

i'm looking forward to hearing what the engine sounds like with the exhaust finished...the sidepipes are essentially 3' long glasspacks.

once i get my metal order in from terrace(western pacific metals, good guys:icon_thumby:)i'll have lots to do.too bad it's going to take up the better part of four days to go pick it up.
oh well, that's the price you pay for living in this rainy paradise.i have fun.

Ya know...I've never gotten anything from them guys...I always seem to end up going to Johnny's Welding to get my material. I'll have to try out western pacific next time I need something.

When abouts you thinking of coming to Terrace?

I have an idea on what it'll sound like

Badassness, if not It'll be pretty close. :icon_hornsup:

:headbang::D

brian at wpm is pretty good with tracking down the mixed-bag orders i get,and when i need something sheared or cut the labour costs are quite reasonable.

Building headers 101.............I gotta take notes on this!
Please Doc...........dont skip anything!

Im pretty sure you start at the main flange but then do you figure where you want the collector to end up and fill in the middle?

I agree, I'm quite anxious to see how the master puts this one together.

I bet he'll use an old goat's jaw to cut the pipe and a hot-air-filled politician to weld with!

I may or may not have had a few drinks before thinking of that. Cheers!

ok,i'll try to show what i can.trust me,there's a lot of head scratching that goes on with these, especially when so many tubes need to go into such a tight space.

i'm fresh out of goat's jaws, but there's no shortage of hot-air filled politicians.trouble is the control knob is broken on all of them.:D:icon_cheers:

in the mean time, how about some rockers?making them this way not only gives me a nice even curve, they are also corrosion resistant.

i still have to figure out how the sidepipes will be hung.

Just gonna keep my mouth shut on this one. :icon_rofl:

thank you.:thefinger:

ok,headers.

i start out with a rough schematic drawing that shows how the pipes will be laid out.
with this particular header design,i have paired pipes so there will be three pairs going into primary collectors.the primary tubes are 1 1/2'',the collector goes to 2''.the three 2'' go to the secondary collector, which is 3 1/2'',this tapers to 3'' where it goes into the sidepipe.

here you can see where i have been fitting up some more tubes.this is the hardest part of the job,as there can be a lot of little pieces that all need to fit perfectly.
i just sort of visualise where i want the primary collectors to be,and start figureing how to snake all the tubes around each other to get there.this one is a little tough because i want these collectors in the middle of the engine,so the back three cylinders need to run forward then turn 180* to get in the right direction.the secondary collector will be at the frame at the rear of the motor, close to where the brake line is sitting, and be much easier to run the three 2'' tubes to.

Last time as well as was the first time ....lol......I tried to make a set of headers,I spent more time scratching my head, drinking beer and smoking than building!

Oh and cheers back at ya Topher...........Im putting back a few myself!

Now..............back to the Docs lab.................

virtually all my cutting is done with the little bandsaw, this is a great machine for this sorts of stuff, although a zipcut or even a hacksaw could be used.
i think where a lot of people get into trouble is in thinking it can be done quickly.accept from the beginning that making something worth having will take a few days, then take your time.sometimes i'll take over an hour just to get one piece fit up right.but if i do that,i'll be much more likely to be satisfied with the job for the years afterward that i have to look at it.

this small belt/disc sander is another very handy machine for fitting up parts.small angle changes and length adjustments are pretty easy using this.it's a 6x48''belt,and 9'' disc.

So your kinda going with something similar to a Tri-Y design?
You are starting at the beginning with the end (side pipe inlet) where you want it and filling in the middle right?

it's very similar to a tri-y.just with more tubes.
i'm actually starting at the exhaust ports, but just keeping in mind where the entrance into the sidepipe will need to be.on this car all there is is the header and sidepipe.there is no other exhaust run to the system.

heres a detail of the right side header showing the primary and secondary collectors.i will probably bemaking the left side collectors tomorrow,so i will show how they are made.
