actually you multiply,not add.consider a stock setup.5 gears in the trans,2 in the t-case.so you have 5 in high,5 in low.that's 10 gears.plus 2 reverses.
if you put in a doubler you now have 5 in high,5 in low,and 5 in low-low.and if the lows are different ratios from each other,then theres another 5.
so i've got 5x2x4x4x2=320.but if two reverses are chosen at the same time,thats another forward gear.there are two different ways to do this,giving two more forward ranges-each works on that 320,so now we're up to 960 forward gears...and we haven't gotten into reverse gears yet.
