It will vary, depending on how good you are at finding things, selling your leftovers to help pay for parts, and how lucky you are at finding things. Right now, I have about $75 in my swap, including the $600 buy in for the Ranger. I simply sold ALOT of the stuff that was coming out/off of it, and bartered /traded/ waited for the rest of the things. It helps to find a truck that you like to start with that has good parts on it that you are going to remove IF you live in an area that has a demand for the parts. Running 2.9s' and GOOD A4LD trannies are RARE around where I live, so those 2 items alone paid for my swap almost. Just depends on alot of things, like I said, and I'm sure that others will agree, more or less.

I spent $5000 easy on a mostly stock 5.0 swap.
But I have not added the receipts.

Some guys can probably do it for $500, some $20,000

It's all how you shop, and what you want as a final product.

by the time mines done ill be $5000 into it

I thought about doing this swap and the cost has detered me somewhat. I think what I will do.. if I ever do one.. is find a 5.0 Exploder and swap it in. Once I saw the radiators, headers, mounts, tranny changes, ect... I started getting that "I can't afford to do this feeling." Such a shame because I bet a 5.0 Ranger would be a blast to wheel in.

its not that bad man.. honestly... so far with my swap.. i have maybe... maybe... ten dollars into it. maybe another ten if you count the busted ratchet. like mudhound said, buy smart. look, wait, trade. the right deal will be out there, you just need to really look for it

So I am in this position where my truck has 198k miles on it.

Are there even people that would be that interested in buying parts that old?

I've heard that you can swap a 5.0 out of a Mustang really easily, is it that easy for the Explorer V8?

Here's something I'm sure I will be flamed and attacked and hated for, but what about putting a 350 or something in a Ranger? I've always been told by these older "much more life experienced" people that maintaining a 350 is easier and cheaper than 289s, 302s, etc. So yeah. Don't hate me please. Just inquiring.

Those old f---kers were drinkin:icon_rofl: when they told you that.(and they were Chebby guys):icon_rofl: The Explorer 5.0 is the easiest swap. And certainly no harder or expensive to maintain than a SBC.

Well that's a relief. My first car was a 94 Mustang GT but it got totaled, which makes me cry, so I always thought it was kind of quaint to drop a 5.0 in my truck. Makes me happy to hear that!

Now I just need to find it :D

I have MAYBE $2500 in my swap total including the price of the truck, new front sheetmetal and lights, wheels and tires. I started with a hunk of crap truck and bought a total 88 Mustang for $300. Needless to say, I parted out the car and the parts i didn't need from my truck and used that money to build the truck.

I am $533 out of pocket into my swap so far. I've been tracking everything for the BII with excel since I've started rebuilding it. Why? I dunno, call it OCD.

I have a 302, np435 trans, AA adapter, EB dana 20, motor mounts, oil filter adapter, and some cool VDO gauges. Old stuff slowly sells, and I'm waiting for deals on other things I need. I estimate a total of $2000-$2500 total out of pocket cash before my BII can move under its own power.

My best advice is:

Wait patiently for deals, act fast when you find them. This goes for buying AND selling.

I got my engine/trans/t-case for a third of the original asking price, because I whittled the buyer down over the course of about a year. When the day came, I showed up with cash to pay, and my trailer to carry away.

Somebody up above said they only had $10 in their swap. I had that much in just cleaning and painting the block. Everyone has their own bugget and plans. New Tremec TKO with bellhousing, clutch and everything ran $2200 new, you aren't going to find them in a yard. Just the little things add up.
