vin code X OHV or SOHC 1999

I have a 99 ranger with the 4.0 that I thought was a SOHC but after checking the vin now I aint sure.

the engine code 8th place in vin is X so is it a OHV or SOHC?

I think 2001 was the first year for the SOHC in a ranger, pretty sure you have the OHV.

for the 99, vin X is the OHV system. Good old pushrod engine

unless it was swapped in, it is definitely an OHV 4.0

If it is a SOHC, it will say so on the throttle body cover.

thanks for the help, when I got home I checked it out and no whare does it say SOHC and on the driver side valve cover is a sticker with some numbers and the letters "ohv" so its the older engine.

Yeah...01 was the first year for the SOHC in the Ranger. It was in the explorer starting in '97.

Not all '97 Explorers had the SOHC, it was an option in '97. '98 was the first year the Explorer only got the SOHC.

Actually, they had the OHV standard all the way up to 2000, just like the Ranger, but most of them rolled off the assembly line with the newer SOHC.

Up to 2000 Ranger was OHV, the easy one to work on, then '01 went SOHC . .they suck rotten a$$ to work on. Had to put heads on one of each.

yes it says 4.0 EFI. Thank god for that cause tomorow I am tearing into it to replace the head gaskets and have the heads checked out.
