1998 Ranger Won't Start

'98 Ranger Won't Start - Update 11-13-09

I have a 1998 Ranger that is a daily driver. Its is a 4x4, 4.0v6 and 5spd. It has 190,000 miles. A couple of weeks back while driving home from work the enigine died and would not start back. Oil and coolant levels were fine. It did not have fuel at the check valve on the rail though. I replaced the fuel pump in the tank and the fuel filter as well but the truck still will not crank.

I am hoping someone here can point me in the right direction of what to look for and what else to check.

Just for kicks and giggles I'd check the inertia switch to see if its tripped or unplugged

Checked that earlier today and even ran a jumper wire on the plug to see if I had a bad switch. Tried starting fluid today also. The truck will not even fire up on starting fluid. Pulled a plug wire at the coil pack and it is firing. I don't know where to start looking next unless it is a timing issue.

Checked the truck today with an OBD II code reader. No codes showing and still not running...

Found out today that my truck has jumped time. How big of a job is this to do. The manual I have says I need to pull the motor to replace the timing chain. looks like this is going to suck!

Year & size are in the first post of this thread, 1998 4.0v6.

When the cylinders should be compressing the fuel/air mixture it is blowing the mix back up through the intake. Looks like the valves are open when they should be closed.

^^^ok so that sounds like timimg probably broke the chain if it did the 4.0 will bend valves so you can try to replace the chain and guides and might get lucky and it not have but that suck man hate to hear that

Truck up and running as of Thanksgiving day.

The culprit was the top timing sprocket that had broken into five pieces. Its just nice to have my truck back on the road. Made for a good Thanksgiving this year.
