Six digit (million mile) speedo?

I bought this instrument cluster on eBay last week and it came in yesterday. When I took a closer look, it struck me that it's actually got a sixth digit for the hundred thousand mile indicator. When did this happen? I've got a '94 Ranger and Explorer, each of them came with the five digit speedos that roll at 100k. Anybody know what the story is here?

I think some older speedo's had em. My 1993 is the same as the one in your 1994.

I think my '91 dash has a million-mile odometer. I'll try to remember to look at it this afternoon and see if it adds to or subracts from the mystery.

Sorry - I should have clarified that a bit. The eBay one has six mile digits plus a seventh .1 digit.

yeah thats what I have 6 digits plus the .1 digit.

I wonder if just the regular cabs rangers came with the 6 digit? Could that be a possibility?

I'm really not sure anymore. Of the two I have with the 5+1 speedo's, one is from a 94 regular cab 2.3 and the other from an Explorer. I can't figure out what the pattern is.

What's really frustrating is that I would love to use the new 6+1 because I like it showing actual mileage. Unfortunately, it's a full 100k miles short of my current mileage and I'm not about to spin it with a drill long enough to make up for that.

I have an 88 ext. and a 97 ext. The 88 has a 5 digit plus tenths and the 97 has a 6 digit plus tenths.
Not that it sheds a light on anything but there it is.

At this point I don't think it's reasonable to assume that it's related to the vehicle configuration at all. More likely that Ford substituted a 6+1 design in late '94 that Graff got and I missed, and that Sasquatch_Ryda's has been replaced at some point.

My parents '94 Explorer has a 5 digit, it has a Oct '93 build date so that supports your theory.

appears to be. Im not really sure of my build date. How do I find that out?

It was stamped on top the radiator support, to the passenger side if I remember right.

It was in red/pink ink.

If that doesn't work you can get the month and year off of the doorjamb sticker.
