Six digit (million mile) speedo?


my 94 w/ 4.0 manual extra cab has the 6 digit + .1. 191,000 right now
 
What's really frustrating is that I would love to use the new 6+1 because I like it showing actual mileage. Unfortunately, it's a full 100k miles short of my current mileage and I'm not about to spin it with a drill long enough to make up for that.
Slap some tape on the trigger and walk away.
 
This isn't a definitive answer, but here's what the Ford shop manuals have to say on it.

The 1993 manual states "A million mile tamper-resistant odometer is standard on all New York State vehicles. Also, all service speedometer head assemblies have a non-resettable million mile odometer."

The 1994 manual states: "A million mile tamper-resistant odometer is standard on all vehicles. Also, all service speedometer head assemblies have a non-resettable million mile odometer."

So apparently for the U.S. market, New York required the 6+1 odometer first, which was then standardized the next year on all vehicles. I guess this was a running change during the '94 model year, since some '94s are found with the 5+1 digit odo. Ford may have been using up remaining stocks of the old cluster in production, since the service heads were already 6+1 digit.

I don't know about this, but it would seem that Canadian-market trucks, with kilometer-per-hour speedometers, would likely have been 6+1 digit odometers all along. Can any Canadian members shed any light on this?

My '94 2.3 SC has the 6+1 digit odometer.
 
I wish my '88 had a 6+1 odometer. I'd like to know just how many miles had been put on it.
 
I live in NY and my trucks a 5+1. Must have came from a different state, New Jersey probably. The PO before the woman I bought it from lived in NYC.

I don't think you understand how long that would take. The drill I grabbed to try it today would only spin it up to about 40mph. At that rate, it would take almost three and a half months of continuous operation. Pretty sure my drill wouldn't survive that long.

It was a mid-year change.

My '94 has 6+1 digits (build date 4-'94)

What about finding one from a JY that has closer to your millage?
 
It's certainly an option, but of all the truck related things I could spend my time and money on, that one just isn't a big deal to me. I may rig up a way to keep it running on a drill long enough to get it precisely 100k off of mine as that's well within reason, but that would be it.
 
Mine has the 5+1/10ths. 94 with a build date of 11/93.

I bet a Dremel would turn a few more rpms then your drill :D
 
That's an interesting point. I'd be a little concerned about burning up something inside the speedo though. Might give it a quick test later. Thanks for the idea.
 
I think it was hit and miss on them up to late '94 when they all came with the 6th digit.

try an air die grinder and some electrical tape, should get it goin good and fast , should only take a month or two, lol
or mabe just turn the 6th didget to 1:icon_idea:
i dont even know if thats possible but its worth a try
