I am ready to plunge into this though, and not sure if I should go with a basic 4".. or if I should spend the extra money on component speakers.

So, components in front, or components in back? IDK why it says all this, but I only have 4 speakers in my truck, 2 dash, and 2 behind my seats

i wanna say its from the different options you could have, there have been alot of posts about this and crutch feilds lack of info, but what are you looking for just replacement of all your speakers, or really plunge in with a twin amp system.

well for right now, just replacing the dash speakers


in time, hopefully i will get some components for the back, amp or two, and a sub



but for right now, i'm looking around for some 4" (I THINK???) speakers for the front. and they don't make 4" components do they? idk really.. noob here..

if irc the 4 ich up there have a funny bolting pattern so any thing you do ill take a lil work, im bias to aplins my slef, and if your gonna spend the money get the type R they type s are good too, the JBL are nice stay away from RF and the mb seem like a lotta $$ for them.

on the alpine website they only have one 4"...
I'm not very comfortable with modifying my dash SO much... so idk how I could get R's or S's...
Other than the ones i mentioned above, which are Alpine Type-S... but they are the lowest of the S's...


Can about $100-$150 get me a pretty good pair for dash speakers?

ok first 100- 150 for a good set of speakers, yes and no,
the yes, yes you can get a good set in alot of different brands for the front.
the no, idk about the website deals, but you have to look at you end result, if you plan to amp your speakers down the road, your 35wrms speakers for 75-100 will kinda be hard to amp but your head unit will power then just fine. even the best 52wx4 HU is really putting out 25ish wrms, i dont want you to buy something twice, so if you can get something in the 50-100 rms it will be easer/ worth it to amp them. if your speakers are 35w and you amp them, thats alot of time and money for 15 extra watts so thats up too you.

as far as your other post,

dash/ component
alpines, JL, JBL, eclipse, kickers people like the mb's,

amps
im an alpine guy, but they dont make alot of small stuff, any of the names above that fit your need will work

boxes
3/4 mdf or greater is a must. most people do sealed boxes they can be smaller. ported boxes have to be matched to the sub. sealed boxes= the smaller the CF the more puncher feel it in your chest, (alot of people like that) the bigger the CF the more rumbley it will be.

subs,
depending on what your doing, and space but again you cant go wrong with the above names. common size is 10 or 12, theres alot to adjust the sound with the box, but the bigger you go the harder it will be to "punch", you might like a 15 but it will never "punch" and if your dead set on a 15 i have one in a box, $150 and shipping and you can find out for your self lol

all depend on the need, some cheepys dont have the options you need, like rca's front and rear. but if your not going crazy a $100 pioneer from wally world can work or you can go get a 7ich touch screan from clarion lol

so you're saying i want dash speakers with 50-100 watts rms? the highest I have seen while looking around is like 75w rms lol.. idk maybe i need to look better

When it comes to the first gen trucks Crutchfield's site is messed up. I've noticed that I can't even select a dash speaker, it only allows me to select door or kick panel speakers. In the past they would let you select dash speakers and they shipped with the above adapter bracket.

so you're saying that i will HAVE to have those in order to install any speakers in my dash of my 1988 ford ranger xlt single cab?

I will not say that but it's probably the easiest way to install the 4" speakers in it. I've currently got a cheap set of Walmart 3" speakers (IIRC) installed without them. When I eventually redo the interior of my 84 the current stereo equipment will be going out. I will be installing the largest speakers in the front that I can fit under the OEM grill, which are probably 4", and I will be using those adapters. I will also be putting a Highliner Headliner (not with the speakers it comes with), 2 8" or 1 10" sub, and amps.

so the hole up there is actually smaller than 4"?


basically what I'm asking,

1) if i buy coax 4" speakers and those brackets, will i need much car audio experience to hook them up?

but what i am realizing.. if i want 70rms on my speakers, i need a component system, and idk how comfortable i am installing a tweeter.. drilling holes and what not.
