torque converter

ok , i have a 00 Ranger 3.0 , auto , i am trying to reinstall the engine , i put the torque converter in the trans before i started to put the engine in , well ,i went to put the engine in and my tc has alot pf play up and down and sise to side , is this normal ? do i have it all the way in ? how do i tell if it is all the way in ? any input would be great

a little play is normal, as the torque converter is supported by being bolted to the flexplate.

i usually spin the torque converter both ways while pushing it into the transmission. it'll "click" down then "clunk" a little more solidly and that means your home.

now i am correct in thinking it should spin freely while in the trans , right

ok , wicked , i do not recall if you have done this , but you have pulled a 3.0 , correct , if so , when you reinstalled the engine , did you have the exhaust manifolds on or off , mine are currently bloted to the rest of the exhaust , and did you have the motor mounts in place or did you remove them , mine are in the truck , n place , and how do you get the starter to go in ?

i usually leave manifolds bolted to the engine, but i dont see why you couldnt leave them in the truck too.

motor mounts usually stay in the truck. the start doesnt go in until everything else is bolted together.

well , i asked because i am running into a huge problem trying to get the two lined up in the truck , and it just looks like there is no room to put my starter in after i get it all together

youll be able to get the starter in after the engines in. if you couldnt, thatd mean youd have to pull the engine just to change the starter and thatd be a little rediculous

you have something supporting the bellhousing of the transmission, right?

we have a jack with a 4x4 under the tranny , and the engine is hooked to a chainfall

should fall right into place.

just take your time and tilt the engine and adjust the height/angle of the transmission with the jack as needed. make sure you arent pinching any wires or hoses or the like.

all the wires are up and out ouf the way , it is jst the fact that it is taking so long because it has been like 12 degrees out during the day and i am workin in an unheated barn , laying on the dirt floor with the door half open because the chainfall is in a spot where the truck will not fit all the way in the barn to use the chainfall

its done , the engine and trans are mated together , now i just have to put everything else back on

i knew youd get it in due time. you just have to mess with it until all the angles are JUUUST right.

Im not to sure if this is to late but the trque convertor has 3 clicks ( or maby four i will need to double check tommorow) that happen before it is all the way in. Also when the trand and engine are mated the torque convertor will spin freely from the flexplate so you dont have to line it up. If the torque convertor is not on correctly the trans pump will burn up very,very soon followed by the trans.

not sure what youve been working on, but it aint no ford. the torque converter studs need to be lined up with the flexplate holes before the trans and engine will kiss. try tightening the bellhousing bolts with the torque converter misaligned and you'll ruin your trans pump in a hurry.
