From the article:

Ford is recalling more than 741,000 vehicles in the U.S. because a transmission issue may damage the park system, which could increase the risk of a crash or injury.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said in a report that the recall includes certain Ford F-150, Lincoln Aviator, Ford Explorer, Lincoln Navigator and Ford Expedition vehicles with model years between 2018 and 2021.

The report states that impacted vehicles may experience temporary engagement of their transmission parking pawl while the vehicle is in motion when certain shifts are commanded by the transmission, potentially damaging park system components.

If transmission park system damage occurs, the ability of the transmission park feature to hold the vehicle if the parking brake is not applied may be affected. Unintended movement in “park” increases the risk of a crash or injury, according to the report.

The NHTSA said that Ford is aware of 24 allegations of property damage and nine alleged injuries, with two of those being allegations of emotional injuries, related to the issue.

Vehicle owners will be notified by mail and told to take their vehicle to a Ford or Lincoln dealer to have their vehicle’s Powertrain Control Module updated to the latest level software. Dealers will also inspect the vehicle’s transmission for park system damage and replace damaged transmission components as needed. There will be no charge for the service.

Vehicle owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332 or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 for more information.

My normal move is to make a snarky joke, but this is crazy scary.

Parking pawl that doesn't engage or engages at random times is terrifying.

Luckily it's super simple to fix properly. 🙄

Obligatory curmudgeon edit :

Carburetor, points, distributor, manual transmission.

Electric park control must be better, a mechanical lever couldn't do that without the driver's help.
Keep in mind that Ford always emphasizes the worst case so people will bring vehicles in to get them fixed and doesn't try to minimize the consequences like some companies whose initials are Toyota and Honda.

@19Walt93

way back when i started in the auto industry in 07, i worked for a toyota dealer, i was there for the A0A A0B and 90L recall (unintended accel) and the tacoma / tundra frame rust recall....what a mess. Left that dealer in 2012. started at ford in 2013 and was there full time and worked my way up to parts manager until april of 23, now just work there a saturday here and there

The frame rust "recall" apparently wasn't an actual safety recall because it has expired and people with rusty or broken frames are S.O.L., like one of my friends with a Tacoma. Safety recalls never expire. If a Ford or GM had frames made out of pressed Schlitz cans that rusted through in 5-6 years NHTSA would force a recall- and justifiably so.
Toyota's early drive by wire system would cause sudden WOT(wide open throttle). No recall was issued and Toyota blamed the problem on their customers being too stupid to pull the floor mat from under the gas pedal. And no one was offended.
A woman was killed in 2001 by a Takata air bag in a Honda. Honda issued a recall in late 2014 when NHTSA forced them. Most astute businessmen would know that your customer won't buy more of your product if it kills them.
Consumer Reports magazine still loves Toyotas and Hondas.

After a certain point rusted truck frames are just a fact of life.

Rangers have been doing it forever, boxed frame F-150's after a certain age are pretty bad about it as well.

I worked at a dealer in NH from 1975 until May 31, 2017 and the only Ranger frame problems we had were the rear spring hangers. NH salts the roads so heavily that they are white once the road dries between storms. The salt coating on the yellow lines keeps the lane keeping in my 25 Escape from working. I never heard about major frame rust on Rangers until I read it on this site.

Yeah, I didn't see much point in showing it to my dealer either lol.

Spring hangers, pocket behind rear shock mount bracket and behind the front spring buckets. Much like newer boxed frames on F-150's it is mainly where debris gets caught and holds moisture. I don't know if salt really has that much to do with it although we get our fair share here as well.

It is what it is, steel rusts. Ford doesn't have some special steel that never rusts. :icon_rofl:
