New tools you've bought recently?

What one is the correct tool?

The hammer or the pipe wrench?
The one that gets the job done with the least damage to viable parts. Generally, pipe wrench is bad because it's jaws will mar surfaces that may be critical for precision fits. But... it can be very effective.

My workshop workhorse flashlight for six or seven years has been a cheap Walmart pistol grip HyperTough. Well, the HyperTough gave up the ghost. It really wasn’t a surprise since I’ve taken it apart and fixed it 5-6 times and glued the parts back together a few times, the surprise was that it lasted this long.

Well, probably like most of you guys, I must have 30 flashlights, big and small, all kinds, but nothing bright and rechargeable like that one. So around the time I got Lincoln 4 1/2 years ago, I bought this Braun at Harbor Freight, on sale, I think it was just under $20

As the old one deteriorated, I was always trying to catch another one on sale, but the couple times I caught it, I couldn’t make it to the store, and when I had a 20 or 30% off coupon, there were more expensive things I needed.

Sooooo, when the HyperTough died, I was going to bite the bullet and buy another Braun at Harbor Freight, but I couldn’t find it online. Then I found out they were on close out. They didn’t have any by me, but I rode over to the Stone Mountain store about 15 miles away, since they had some in stock.

When I got there, the store layout was totally different, so I went up to the register to ask the lady, but there was a guy checking out. They were talking about a membership. My annual memberships pay for themselves in weeks, so I just said to the guy, if you’re considering it, it’s worth every penny. After he checked out, the gal got somebody else to bring me the lights.

Well, the closeout price was $9.95. And there’s a 20% off coupon for members this weekend, but I’m not sure it applies to things on closeout and such. So I was going to get one light, and then the gal said it was so nice of me to recommend the membership, so she gave me the 20% off on two of them. So I got the two for about $15. It pays to smile and be nice to folks, huh?

In the grand scheme of things, it’s kind of a nothing thing, but I feel like I hit the lottery!

Damn good lights. I keep one at my front door.

FAAAANNNNCCCCYYYYY new 1/2" drive Torque Wrench.

I broke my nearly 20 year old Craftsman 1/2" drive torque wrench the other day... It's not supposed to just go spinny spinny! 🤷‍♂️

I ran over to Lowe's to see if they would warranty it out.
Customer Service said "No Problem, go grab another one and bring it back..."

Well the only one they have is much mo' biggah 'n mo' faannncccyyy den da old one!

Dang thing ain't gonna fit in the toolbox. I'mma have to hang it next to it.
For size reference, the grey plastic tray was the holder for the old one.

Stopped at a little surplus/salvage place last week or the week prior and ended up leaving with a "pocket lathe" for like 4 bucks lol.

Ever since my cousin got me a Leatherman for the Christmas of '24 I've been slowly turning into one of those "EDC" guys.. the Leatherman saved the day at work & elsewhere quite a lot last year and kinda opened my eyes a bit. Started to carry a single AAA flashlight everywhere I went last fall.. wayyy better than a cellphone light.. then a sharpie.. lighter.. most recently the pocket lathe..

Summer means losing roughly 8 or 9 pockets to put this crap in.. so I wound up getting a little EDC pouch on sale shipped for like 30 bucks..

Just hangs off my belt with a carabiner.. money well spent. Tossed some zip ties in it today.. still got plenty of room. Extra batteries for the light would be good.. perhaps another adjustable or mabey some little channel locks or something.. idk. It's a journey lol.

Pouch is from 5.11 tacticool. Egor Sierra is the model name or whatever..
Dunno if it's a thing where y'all are at but you see a lot of people around here carrying a normal pair of pliers around in a pouch on their belt.

I totally get the Leatherman but just a normal pair of pliers??? It's weird. Maybe I'm just not a pliers guy. They're not a good hammer, maybe just a mediocre wrench, definitely not vise grips, and won't work on screws or pull a nail. What gives? I'd almost rather carry a crescent wrench around, now THAT'S a good hammer.
I've always found that a little weird. Then again, I carry both a Leatherman and a crescent wrench...
Miiiiiine goes to 1/2" 😎😎😎

4" long though. 3" is suuuuper compact.

I bet the Craftsman is probably a bit "tighter" too.. especially being made that long ago. My only problem with adjustables has always been the amount of slop they usually have in them.
A bigger tool is better for most of what I screw around with, so I carry an average sized 6". Everyone thinks it's funny until it comes in handy. I especially enjoy when the same person needs it later the same day, which has happened far more than once. I try not to use it as a hammer though. It was my grandfather's and I would rather abuse junkier tools than his USA-made Proto. He bought it with his tool allowance, and he was my dad's dad, so it's even engraved with my last name.

The left pile is my left pocket, plus my phone, assorted change, and whatever else. That 2 AAA pen light sucks down batteries if it gets bumped on and I don't notice my pocket heating up, but it's really bright for its size. Two ink pens because I somewhat frequently get asked for one while I'm already using one. The right pile is my right pocket. A 6' tape measure, a box cutter, and a cheap Wal-Mart knife. Plus all of my keys. And if I'm going camping sometimes I'll put a lighter in my pocket watch pocket, but most of the time I prefer the relative challenge of starting fires with a flint and steel and only what I find around camp. I usually have a box of matches in with my stove and lantern if I need them.
Wal-Mart carded me on the green knife, which was so dull it probably wouldn't cut Jell-O when I bought it, but for some reason they didn't on the package of four box cutters plus a bunch of spare blades that I got from the clearance section.

For new tools, I found a slightly rusty Allen wrench under the seat of a Ranger in the junkyard Monday. Right next to about 30 cents in change.

Well, I guess this can go here…

I was gifted this… it needs a new something with the print head but otherwise is in good shape. I need a 3D printer like I need another hole in my head. I mean, I’ve kinda wanted one and all, but I really don’t have the time or energy right now to learn to do much. But maybe I can use it to print some things if I can come up with a file that someone already made. I just don’t really want to add getting comfortable with digital CAD to my current workload. I haven’t messed with digital CAD in years.

I’ve been carrying a Leatherman (Supertool 300), box cutter, flashlight, lighter, and 6’ tape measure for years now. The Leatherman lives in a pouch on my belt and the lighter plus tape measure hang from a belt loop. Too much stuff to shove in pockets and be comfortable.

This was my deal with wanting to buy the purse lol. Im not really a fan of anything in my pockets besides the stereotypical stuff.. wallet, phone, knife etc.. so stuffing all the junk I carry now into my pockets was a definite no go.

Don't need the thing during winter.. I always wear a vest that has 4 chest pockets and my pants have little "cargo" pockets on both legs.. plenty of room.. but I'm down to a t shirt and Dickies from now until October so.. the purse was a necessity.
