Yes, you want to be coming up on compression stroke. Pull plugs, you can turn the engine over with a remote start and feel for pressure with finger on, NOT in, sparkplug hole. Then back engine a bit, feed in rope, and hand crank to tdc.

im boutta have this thing running like brand new. might rebuild it if i have to, seems like a good block to learn on.

is there anyone running this holley carb? seems like its within the cfm range for the v6. I know theres more specs that needs to be met but i was just curious if it would work.
