13 pints of fire roasted salsa...

was at tsc today & saw they were doing a season clearance on chickens. $1 each. I “only” brought home 9. Now I need to build a small coop for them since it will be a while before they can join the other 15.

The black ones look more like crows, than chickens.

No biggee . . . there's decent crow recipes out there.

I was at the farm store earlier this year. Older lady and her husband pushing around a cart with like 6 big (like 50lb) bags of raw peanuts. I asked him if he was gonna roast them or something? Wife piped right and said the peanuts were for the the blue Jay's. Old guy says... I'm going broke feeding the damn things. Without missing a beat... I looked right at the lady and said... I have an amazing blue Jay recipe I'm willing to share.

Old man laughing...

Old lady... if looks could kill I woulda died twice that day.

Minding my own business... picking my garden this cool Saturday morning... BAM!! There's my wife flashing me with camera in hand. God I love her.

Our garden doesn't look anywhere that nice. Neither of us have had time to keep up with it. We have gotten quite a few tomatoes and the brussels sprouts are doing nicely. I think Jessica has gotten a few peppers out of it as well.

Yeah... a garden can be a time suck. Even more time if it does well. I ended up canning 7 more pints of salsa... but i amped up the heat on that batch.

I did dump out one of my potato bags (the foliage was dead). I'd guess there was about 3 pounds of potatoes in there. Hopefully the second one yields more then the first.

It's been years since I grew potatoes... but damn... the texture and flavor blew my mind. I'm already planning to plant them next year in a much bigger way. They were that good...

I've been working on the Ford 2000 tractor I picked up a few months ago now (how time flies...). Saturday I pulled the business end of the injection pump apart to de goo it, it was gross so it needed it, both pistons that ride on the cams were stuck and one of the rollers was stuck too... Fought some crossthreaded fasteners which conveniently weren't completely screwed... Was at a stopping point for the weekend before I got some starting fluid to use sparingly but got some Monday and it was looking promising but it couldn't get fuel out of the tank anymore so I knew it had to be the petcock so I got a new one ($12, was here today...). It ran on pure diesel for about a minute then stalled so next step is the return check ball on the pump which I expected... we'll try that tomorrow.

Maybe I can put this thing to work now that it’s finally charging like it’s supposed to, lol. If only I had some functioning implements…

Finally got the beans out!

First off I had my soybeans sprayed for weeds last summer. Local co-op did a horrible job. Killed about a fourth of my soybeans and about the same on the weeds. I had to replant quite a bit of it.

So we had to wait until frost to finally help quite a bit of them to finish turning so they would dry and it took a really good frost to kill all the grass.

Combine needed some repairs, then dad got sick, then I got sick, then dad got sick again. Then it snowed. Then it got real cold. Then we got like an inch of rain and would nothing would dry out. Then in the middle of February... the stars aligned.

.

It wasn't long before the siren song of the ol' 404 at 2500rpm sitting beside me started working its magic...

When it was good it was good.

When it wasn't... it wasn't. The cleaner patch ahead is where I had to replant in the above picture, knowing it was going to be lagging I split rowed them to help maybe add a little yield. I also wonder if that helped them canopy and fight off the weeds on their own.

Saturday night it was getting dark and I suppose the dew was starting to set it, and I plugged it up. I heard the engine lay into and was reaching for the foot clutch to stop the machine and let it digest... and the slip clutch let go.

I can vouch that a John Deere 6600 combine makes a miserable hay baler.

Then I went to pull the wagon up into the barnlot so it didn't run away on me and was reminded that my borrowed rear tire has neither a wheel weight or fluid like my other tire. That was a bit of a pucker moment sliding back down the hill.

I am so glad to have that miserable year of farming behind me.
