I was thinking just a rinse with the garden hose will suffice, maybe some engine degreaser on the base where oil has accumulated.

As to how crusty it is... think of those barn find car videos where there is 20+ years of dirt caked on. It's about like that. I tried compressed air and it won't touch most of it, I think it has been through enough humid & dust cycles that it really needs to be washed in order to come clean. But, I could just leave it alone and run it like it is.

Cleaner is better. The layers of dusty crusty crap will hold in heat, which causes the varnish insulation to break down faster. I know there's only so much you can do. Give it the effort you think it deserves.

Minimal water and a scrub brush? I've also found that dry brushing then compressed air works wonders sometimes. Depends mostly on what's in the dirt.

this brake wasn't too bad, broken down the heaviest piece was about 100 lbs. the appliance dolly handled it.
a couple weeks ago I had to get help taking a 400 block down the stairs, in a controlled manner.

I'm fantasizing about a portable rail system with winch attached to a Ranger, I wonder if Rick has any extra garage door channels.

And they happened to be having a scratch and dent sale...
I think I'm lucky I spent only $600.00...
Good thing my truck wouldn't hold anymore...

I don't have the electrical capacity to run a 10hp electric motor, so I bought the 420cc gas motor. That is about a 14hp unit but it needs derated for compressor duty. It should work tho. I'll sell the 10hp electric and may pull a profit on just that one item.
I'll also sell the wheelbarrow compressor if I can fix it cheap. Otherwise its parts for the gas engine on the rotory screw compressor.
I'll sell my old horizontal compressor to make room for this stand up one.
I have the varsol already bought several years ago for the parts washer.
The small compressor needs a look to see why it doesn't start. Hopefully just a loose connection.

Last year at my Princess Auto scratch and dent sale I passed on a 60 gallon Sanborn compressor for more than your total spend because it had an actual dent in it and I got cold feet.
That's an insane haul for that price. Kudos, and please PM me your lottery numbers.

EDIT: oh, also I'm moving to Calgary tomorrow.

Got the small compressor working. It was just the two female quick connects leaking. Simple swap out and it works great.

what's the cfm on the big boy? I'm curious if twin screws are more efficient than traditional piston units. for sure they are smaller.
220 or 440? either way that would be a lot of power for home use. good luck on the gas conversion.

Inrush current is what would kill me. I'm running a 5hp electric right now and it works on a 30amp circuit. But my 7000 watt generator won't run the 5hp. Inrush is too much for the genny. Gas should solve that problem.
The rotory plate says 33.3 cfm.
The one I'm running now is ~22cfm if I measured tank size properly.

I think its one of the reasons it was in the scratch and dent. One of the workers said the original purchaser said it wouldn't run on a 40amp circuit. As soon as I heard that I thought he didn't know about inrush. So I got the compressor for about a dime on the dollar...

That sounds like it was designed to run on a dryer/stove outlet. Whole lot of electric motor for home use though.

In electrical design, inrush, or starting current for a motor or even just energizing a transformer is generally considered to be 5 times running amps.

Proper circuit design, for a 40amp load, the circuit breaker should be 125% of full load amps, so a 50amp breaker for that motor. All wiring components in the circuit must be sized for 50amps.

Although inrush could be 5 x 40, or 200 amps, it is for such a short duration of time that it won't trip the 50amp circuit breaker.
