Purpose/Uses of factory bed liner's notches?

I liked your picture of D rings enough to google about a bit.. I found 2" D rings that have the right size center hole (12mm) and aren't terribly unreasonable price - also found em on aliexpress for $2.5/ring but they are shaped different... have to check all of em to see if they will fit in the recess without sticking up

I'm going to borrow and resurrect this thread if ya'll don't mind, seeing as how we talked about it earlier...

I picked up a set of 4th gen / 5th gen bed anchor points, and was wondering what you guys thought of the best reasonably doable way to mount em in the bed... I don't have a portable sawzall so couldn't knife open the donor and see how ford did it originally. Would Pop-Nuts be good enough or have a tendency to just tear the sheetmetal since they don't spread out the load? Does anyone have a picture of how Ford did it in the 4th and 5th gens?
For clarity, this is what I am talking about:

I did take pics of where they were mounted in the donor (a 1999), and have a '07 in the house which I can take measurement references off of.

Also ask if there is any common complaints ( everyone says they are too high, too low, interfere with xyz) - might sway me in changing their location slightly.

I can't comment on the mount height since I have a platform in the truck. So they work fine where they are for me.

From memory, there should be existing holes with nuts welded to the back or threaded inserts already in them. So, you should be able to just bolt them right in to the bed.

Personally I like tie off points as low in the bed as possible.
I'd weld those in. Failing that get some metal on the back side, maybe 3" x6", and bolt thru that.

slight misfire on generations... We are talking about a 2nd gen for the recipient (my 1990)... nothing exists in the 1st gen or 2nd gen. It's just a regular sheetmetal skin.

A blank canvas then. Put them where they best meet your needs and use threaded nutcerts to mount them.

My high lift jack mount is held in place with them and it hasn't gone flying yet and they are holding my windshield visor to the roof. I think they will be fine.

On my 2020 I keep a 2x4 in the notches and a pair of (usually nested) laundry baskets to put small items and groceries in. That way they're not sliding around. I have a vinyl roll-up tonneau cover.
