TRS Event TRS 25th Anniversary Fall Adventure - Land Between The Lakes - September 5th – 8th, 2024

Uh oh…

View attachment 116634

My afternoon plans just changed. I went outside to change the oil and check everything for tomorrow’s drive. If it looks serious, I’ll be coming in the Road Ranger

A little follow up. I topped off the rear end fluid before I left, 350 miles to LBL, and I checked it when I was up there. I haven’t checked it since I’ve been back, but…

I had a little feint tick tick tick for a while before I went up there, and you could tell by the rhythm and the engine speed that it was something in the drivetrain. No grinding or whining. And it sounded like it was on the driver side, maybe towards the rear.

That seemed a little louder by the time I got to LBL. By the time I got home, it had developed into a klickity kłickity klick that was definitely noticeable. Soooo, I ordered the axle shaft bearings and seals, and I’ll be going to Harbor freight for the bearing puller and maybe a slide hammer to replace my homemade slide hammer that always chops off piece of my finger off.

Question: Does the inside of the bearing ride directly on the Axle shaft? Is there a race? I’ve pulled them before, but never paid attention. Is it a matter of just polishing it up with a little sandpaper Or do you have to replace it? I know if it’s wrecked it has to be replaced, but what if it’s just a little scored?

More to follow…

I'm assuming the '87 has a 7.5" differential. The axle shaft *IS* the inner race. The bearing is held in place by a drive fit in the end of the axle tube (hence the need for a slide hammer puller) with the seal going in last. If that axle is scored AT ALL, it will damage the new bearing and you will find yourself doing this all over again. HTH!

What you’re describing doesn’t sound like a typical wheel bearing noise. I would recommend further investigation before assuming. Get the back up on jack stands so you can spin the wheels by hand and listen for the noise. Look for things stuck in the tire tread. Check u-joints and pinion.

sounds joint related. though make sure you do not have a hub locked or sticking or a caliper pin backing out.

This will be the second time I replace the driver side axle shaft seal, so it only makes sense to me to do the bearings too. And when I have that far apart, I’ll do the passenger side as well.

If you recall, my driveshaft rotted out and snapped about a year ago. It has a brand new driveshaft. I will certainly check everything you mentioned, but I had checked all that when I put the driveshaft in. My pinion seal has a little drip, so I’m going to replace that at the same time too. Of course, I’ll have the brakes exposed to check all of that.

But basically, I’m saying thank you, I’m always looking for the input. I don’t do this stuff as much as you guys do.

EDIT: and the whole time I’ve had this truck, I’ve only put six or 7000 miles on it. The LBL trip was the longest trip I’ve ever made with it. The truck drives out fine, nothing you would notice from driving it, just the tick and the leaks

could be a bolt in the tire. if it needs a rear bearing. it needs a shaft or an offset repair bearing. jeffs bronco grave yard usually has decent prices on axleshafts.

make sure the front axles spin freely and the caliper pins are seated

IF... it turns out to be the axle, you can get a kit on eBay for less than $70 shipped. Axle, bearing, seal, lug bolts and lug nuts. Pretty much everything except the gear lube.

I made it home like 6:30 pm Sunday...

Was nice to be in my own shower... sleep in my own bed. My wife made baby backs for dinner too... and she never cooks. Even my dog was happy to see me.

I didn't take many pictures. I did ask @85_Ranger4x4 to take a picture of my truck at the Casey Jones Distillery. It was an item you had to have for the Scavenger Hunt. What a good friend he is. No wonder he won it this year...

Probably my best spent money was on my 12 volt fridge. I should have had one of these years ago.

It was a good time... I hope everyone enjoyed pizza night. Gotta thank @Poppa_R for the biscuits and gravy... Mr and Mrs 85 for the sliders... French toast and peach cobbler too.

These events are always to short... and not nearly frequent enough. But it is what it is.

I've already started back in where I left off on my truck to do list. A bit of health issues left things short of where I wanted things to be... a left me on the sidelines for the Vagabond overlanding adventure. I'm gonna get fully rigged and ready for the next opportunity.

Til we see each other again my friends...

That's an awesome picture of your truck there at the distillery!!! Wish I could have made it to pizza night. : ( I may PM you soon for some pointers on making campfire pizza so I can try it at home! Thanks for all your contribution to the event!

Kim thoroughly enjoyed pizza night and was discussing it with our eldest and if we were to return was pushing their summer trip to this event to have all of our nipple heads there as they are old enough to venture about now.....

so thats a win!

I'd also like to thank @LASFIT for their donations to the raffle. I won the molded floor mats and they fit awesome. If anyone with a 19+ is in the market for some molded floor liners. Make sure you check out @LASFIT.

Thursday:

Thursday @Robertmangrum.rm @85_Ranger4x4 @snoranger @ericbphoto and I arrived after 4-days on the Kentucky Adventure Trail. That will be a story for another thread.

I had to go to Walmart 30-munutes north of Prizer Point Campground and order the cakes for Saturday, and then came back and set up camp before dark.

Friday:

We got a slow start Friday. It was nice to get up and not have to break down camp for a change.

Before we could head out, I got a call from a LBL Law Enforcement Officer asking me if I the proper permits for our event. She never told me how she got my number. I don't post it online.

She said that I had posted a photo of myself in area last year that wasn't an approved road. I told her it was Forest Road 308 and that we stick to the 300 roads.

She told me I needed a permit to charge money. I told her we were at Prizer Point and not inside LBL and the money covered the cost of pizza and cake.

She told me I needed a permit for more than 60. We had less than 40.

If she had spent more time reading the event page than trying to find my phone number, she could have saved us both time and aggravation.

I did invite her to join us for pizza though.

Myself and some others finally followed @ericbphoto and checked out the grave site of the drummer boy from the revolutionary war.

Then we went to the 1850's working farm and checked that out.
Here's @bobbywalter telling the girl working the farm that the ducks rape the f---ing chickens.
After getting back to camp, one of the members was having issues with his fuel pump.
We removed the bed, @bobbywalter showed him what was wrong with it, cleaned it out, resealed it, reinstalled it, and had the truck running again.
@ericbphoto manned two pizza fires with the help of @Poppa_R as @Uncle Gump prepped more.
Saturday:

Saturday started out with @Poppa_R and @Mrs. Eighty Five making biscuits and gravy for the whole TRS crew.

@snoranger @Robertmangrum.rm @sgtsandman and I set out to explore some 300 series roads which provided some nice technical challenges.
@snoranger got stuck in one of the mudholes. His aftermarket engine skid plate hangs down lower than the stock one and caused the truck to get high centerered. He has a lift at home but didn't have time to install it before the trip.
We also went and checked out the Fort Donnellson civil war site. I just had to park in front of that clean blue Ranger.
Saturday night @ericbphoto announced the winner of the scavenger hunt, and then I did the drawing for the door prizes and we had cake.
Sunday:

Sunday we packed up to go home. @Robertmangrum.rm created a cool way of airing up all of his tires at the same time.
Once we got packed we all parked for a group photo.
I had to stop at a car wash and washed some of the mud off.
The body is mostly clean but there's still a ton of mud in the wheels and underneath.
I finally got to my mom's house up by Cleveland, Ohio around 10:00 pm.

Thanks!

Thanks to everyone that came out and joined us.

It was great sitting back and watching the young guys driving the older generations of Ford Rangers as well as watching the older guys and younger guys interact. We need to teach the younger generations and lead by examples.

Special thanks to:

@ericbphoto for all the work you did on the scavenger hunt. You're a great representative of TRS and a great friend.

@Poppa_R and @Mrs. Eighty Five for making biscuits and gravy again this year.

@Mrs. Eighty Five for taking over the cutting and dispersing of the cake.

@Uncle Gump for getting all of the pizza supplies and prepping the pizzas, and @ericbphoto for supplying the domes to cook them under and slaving over the fire.

@bobbywalter for always being the first one to jump into action to fix a broken truck.

You're all appreciated far more than you know.

I couldn’t agree more with heart felt thanks to all of those who worked on this and made it a great time for everybody else. Everybody always has suggestions that you should do this or you should do that, but the guys and gals that put this together, they are the real deal and did a fantastic job. THANK YOU!!

Now that I’m home, in hindsight, my only regret is that we couldn’t bring @bobbywalter out of his shell…
