The Motor On My Lincoln Electric 140 Mig Welder

Sumbitch!

When I was feeding the wire into the lead I was holding a blue shop towel over it to wipe it off as it went.

Welded great for a while.

Then guess what happened?

Go ahead. Guess.

I said guess!!

That's right. The wire is sticking again and not feeding smoothly.

This wire is Forney E71T-GS.

I'm tempted to go buy another roll of wire.

This is the brand Ive6been using. I get it at my favorite welding supply store. This is not flux core. But I'm sure they make flux core.

I have an older Weld-Pac Lincoln, forget the model number offhand. I got it used and it didn’t work very well at first. Ended up pulling the liner out and found it had like 14 kinks in it from improper handling. Cleaned it up a bit, put a new liner in with a new tip and flux core cone and all. Works way better now. I decided to give Kiswell a try since a 10# spool of .035 flux core was like $40 shipped from EBay. Seems to work reasonably well. Currently have a 10# spool of their .035 solid wire in my big Lincoln welder. Haven’t checked but it almost looks slightly undersized, seems to work fine though.

Unroll it, wipe the wire clean and reroll it?

Oh yeah, using the flux core cone instead of a gas one helps keep dirt out of the liner. I also use nozzle dip, keeps slag from sticking. You’ll want a couple cones, they have a tendency to melt and burn at times.

I'm going to get some different wire tomorrow. I discovered today that the fan is dying a quick death. I turned on the welder and the fan was moaning and stopped. Easy replacement. I just have to decide if I want to just replace it myself, or save $50 and go through the hassle of driving 1.5-2 hours to take it to an authorized service center and get it fixed under warranty.

You know, things seemed a lot simpler when I was younger and my dad was building shit with a Lincoln stick welder.

Stick welders are good but I'd hate to have it as an only welder... BTDT, I'm liking the wire feed life even with flux core like I lived with for many years, I run the wire feed for primary and stick when I'm doing something thick and I want to ensure a bunch of penetration...

Sometimes with dirty wire you can take a scrap of scotch brite folded over the wire held together with a small binder clip between the spool and the feed...

FWIW, I've used Fourney, Lincoln, Chicago Electric and Vulcan flux core, they all run a little different but I've been able to use everything. The only welder I had really dumb flux core issues with is the old 100A HFT welder, turns out they just have too much voltage to run .030" wire, switched to .035" and it worked much better...

Dumb question but do you have the knurled flux core drive wheel in place or the smooth solid wire wheel? Flux core wire is harder and needs the knurls...

I have the .035 knurled wheel in place.

I think the wiring is different for flux core.
There should be a wiring diagram somewhere in the hatch.
I am a gas wire guy myself...not a big fan of flux core...at that point (gasless) I'll just stick weld it.

Electrode negative for flux core
Electrode positive for gas

Flux core is just a very long stick... that's how I think of it :)

The lincoln wire sometimes gums up my harbor freight 20 year old welder. Their cheapo wire runs fine though
